[San Gabriel] [Taiwanese] 趴趴走 Pa Pa Walk

Pa Pa Walk

San Gabriel, CA, 91776

I've heard about Pa Pa Walk's famous Taiwanese "coffin" bread for a long time.  Even though I grew up in Taiwan, I've never had it before.  Last Saturday Dr. Park wanted to go to QQ for some Taiwanese food.  I suggested to try a new Taiwanese restaurant so I finally had a chance to try Pa Pa Walk.

Coffee ($2.75)

There were about 10 people waiting outside the restaurant when we got there.  We put our name on the waiting list and was called in about 15 minutes.  Dr. Park had to have his coffee every morning.  Well, it wasn't exactly morning, but it was our first meal of the day, so he still needed to order his coffee.  This was your standard instant iced coffee.  Nothing special but did the job for Dr. Park.

Cream Soup In Fried Toast ($6.25)

This was the famous "Coffin" bread.  The English name is called Cream Soup in Fried Toast.  The name described exactly what it is.  But the Chinese name is called "coffin" bread for the shape.  I think in Taiwan they use long bread that looks more like a coffin for this dish.

We like this soup a lot.  It's the Chinese style creamy soup with corn, mushroom, chicken and ham.  Creamy, rich and a bit sweet.  The fried toast was really good dipping in soup.  I guess this is Chinese version of clam chowder in sourdogh bread.

Stewed Chicken Leg w/ Rice ($5.75)

One rice dish and one noodle dish to share.  We were deciding between the pork chop rice and stewed chicken leg rice.  Almost every table ordered the stewed chicken leg.  It looked so good so we ordered it, too.  The stewed leg was very tasty.... but only on the skin.  The meat was juicy and tender, but didn't have much taste.  We added some spicy chili sauce and it was all good.  I like the cabbage.  Dr. Park like the bean sprout (because it has tiny shrimp in it).

Beef Soup w/ Spinach Noodle ($6.50)

Dr. Park loves Taiwanese beef soup.  Pa Pa Walk has this dish with spinach noodle.  We ordered a small bowl and still had leftover to take http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com.

The spinach noodle was green.  But it tasted just like regular noodle.  The beef and tendon was cooked perfectly.  The soup base could be a bit richer in our opinion.  But overall, we like the noodle soup.

Brown Sugar Shaved Ice ($4.50)

For dessert, we had brown sugar shaved ice.  You can pick 5 items with the shaved ice.  We picked lychee, grass jelly, red bean, pudding and condense milk.

We had a great lunch at this new restaurant.  I like the food at Pa Pa Walk.  The restaurant felt more trendy than other Taiwanese restaurant because of its decor and their young & hip waitresses.  Even though everything was great here, we still think QQ's food is better.  And the price is slightly cheaper at QQ as well.  I wouldn't mind coming back to try other dishes.  But QQ is still the best Taiwanese restaurant in our opinion.

  1. Yeah I used to go to Pa Pa Walk a lot before but then their dishes became so expensive and I seldom go there now..

Yeah, this Taiwanese is a bit more expensive than the other ones.
So I still think QQ has the best value and has the best taste.

  2. I've been to Pa Pa Walk a few times myself, but personally I prefer Sin Ba La in Arcadia.

官財板, is it popular in Taiwan?? I grew up in Taipei and go back every year, but I've never seen it before....

I think the dish is more popular in Southern Taiwan.
I also grew up in Taipei and never had the dish before.
Just watched Bizarre Food Taiwan from Travel Channel on YouTube.
They actually featured this dish in the episode.
They called it "coffin bread" and it was from 士林 night market.

Really? Those pictures were taken by you?
They looked so good and made us really hungry!

    Eileen

  8. Thanks for the review Eileen! :) I was planning on trying their famous Coffin Bread soup since so many people were raving about it; I'll have to go try it soon. :)

BTW, if you and Dr. Park want to have some really tasty, No MSG, Beef Noodle Soup, give Noodle House a try (I reviewed it recently on my blog). It's lighter and healthier than most places in the SGV that I've tried (since too many of those places use MSG), whereas Noodle House doesn't.

Dr. Park loves beef noodle soup.
We have to give Noodle House a try soon. Thanks. ^^

  10. I love Papawalk! Their green beef noodle is superb and I love their mango shaved ice!

I saw another table ordered a giant shaved ice.
Looked so good. If I go with a group of people, definately will get that.
