[Los Angeles] [Korean] Seoul Soondae House

I was craving for some spicy Korean food for dinner.  Walked around Korea Town near work and found this little restaurant.  It was empty, but the pictures on the wall looked good so I was lured in.

Noodle with Beef and Other Stuffs ($8.95)

The Korean lady who took my order doesn't speak English.  I had to point to the picture on the wall to order.  The dish is called Noodle with Beef and "other stuffs".  From the picture, I assumed the other stuffs are hot dog, spam, mushroom, green veggies, and glass noodle.  But one should never trust restaurant pictures.  And in this case, don't even trust the name of the dish.

Noodle, check (even though it was just soggy ramen noodle).  Beef?   Where is my beef?  There was no beef to be found.  Or they called hot dog as beef in Korea?  Because I got plenty of hot dog.  Other stuffs, uh.... does green onion count as other stuffs?  I think the more proper name for this dish should be "Noodle with Hot Dog and Green Onion".  The soup was salty, spicy and MSG-y.

As I was waiting in the empty restaurant for my to go order, I glanced over to the kitchen area.  I saw a Korean lady in there preparing for my dish.  While she was stirring the soup in the pot with one hand, she used her other hand to take out a cigarette, lit it, smoked it, all without stop cooking.  Quite skillful.  Maybe I got some bonus ash seasoning in my soup as well.

Panchan

Despite the disappointment in my noodle, I like their kimchi a lot.  Cucumber was quite good, too.  But the radish wasn't as crispy as I like them.  I didn't finish my noodle, but finished all the kimchi.

Korean coworker told me this restaurant is specialized in pork blood sausage.  I don't know.... after trying the noodle, I don't think I'll trust their cook anymore.

  1. Wow, $8.95 for basically "sogogi ramen" or Beef Ramen (instant package type). That's a rip-off.... maybe the hot dog is All Beef hot dog. ??

Yeah, this is such a rip off.
I can just make spicy Korean ramen and add some hot dog & green onion at http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com.
Maybe I'll even add an extra egg.
It'll be much better than this and probably only cost me $3.

  2. I really recommend trying Soondae, but probably not from this place. I'd recommend Western Soondae on western ave :). I love Pork Blood stuff, especially in Taiwan, and when I went to Korea, I fell in love Soondae. Try the Soondae Guk (Pork Blood Sausage Soup) at Western, I think it's combo #3...

Definately not coming back to this place.
I love the Taiwanese pork blood cake... with sweet peanut powder and sweet soy sauce.
I'll check out Western Soondae soon.
    Thanks for the recommendation.

  3. time to call the city health inspection on their kitchen! smoking in the kitchen is just over the line.

Not just smoking in the kitchen....
But smoking AND cooking at the same time!
I'll never go back to this restaurant again.
