[Garden Grove] [Hot Pot] The Red Pot

The Red Pot

We had plan to visit another restaurant in the Garden Grove area. On the way there, we passed by The Red Pot, and I remembered that was the hot pot place my reader Peter commented about. Last time I wrote about Lu Gi, Peter told me about this all you can eat spicy hot pot place in Orange County, and I had it on my "to-try" list. After spotting the restaurant, we changed our mind about where to go for lunch and made a U turn.

It was Saturday lunch time, the restaurant was half empty. I think people like to have hot pot for dinner more.

All you can eat hot pot is $19.99/person. You can pick two soup base. Our waitress told us the most popular one is the spicy herbal soup base. The other soup base she recommended either miso or curry.

After placing our first round of order, we headed to the sauce bar to make our own sauce.

My sauce is simple. I used their house special sauce, which is a fermented bean curd sauce (腐乳醬), and added TONS of green onion, cilantro, and garlic. I love my sauce! Dr. P made his sauce with shacha instead of the fermented bean curd sauce the same way.

Miso Soup Base

We absolutely love their spicy herbal soup base. It had a subtle herbal flavor. Lots of gogi berries, and I even found logan inside the soup. The soup base wasn't that spicy at all so we could drink the soup. It was very tasty. If you would like to make the soup base spicier, just head over to the sauce bar to get some mala sauce to add to the soup base. Miso Soup Base wasn't exactly how I imagine it would be. I thought it would be more like a miso soup. But it was a broth with just a bit of miso flavor. It looked boring comparing to the spicy side. But I had a sip of the miso soup base, and it was flavorful. When we had the soup after the meal, we both enjoyed the miso side better than the herbal side.

Sliced Lamb

The meat at The Red Pot had very good quality. Dr. P thought it was even better than shabu shabu quality meat. I agree! Both the beef and lamb was very fresh and delicious.

Pork Blood

We really like how for everything they just give you enough portion for the people in your party. So for us, everything was 2 people portion. In that way, we could order a variety of things to add to our hot pot. Everything was good. We especially enjoyed the fish, pork blood, shrimp ball, and intestine (ok intestine was just for me haha...).

Shitake Mushroom

For our second round, we got more beef and pork. Beef tendon was really really good in hot pot.

Ton Ho

Also got some vegetables. Ton Ho and napa cabbage are must-have with hot pot. Then we asked for some glass noodle to add to the soup to finish the meal. It was perfect portion. We finished EVERYTHING, and was happy and full.

We really like this place, and thought it was a better value than shabu shabu. Shabu shabu cost about the same, but you only get a plate of meat and a few vegetables. We just had this a few days ago, and I already want it again! So glad to find this place in OC. Thank you, Peter!

  1. Oh funny I was just at Claws the other day and while waiting I saw this place. You should try Claws sometime too since you like Boiling Crab. You can call in and make a reservation there so the wait is a lot more bearable than Boiling Crab and it tastes just as good as Boiling Crab (in my opinion).

Funny that we saw Claws, too! hahahaha....
After we came out from The Red Pot, we saw A LOT of people outside of Claws.
Some seemed to be waiting, and some just came out of the restaurants.
Dr. P and I even said that restaurant must be good with so many people.
From the name Claws, I guessed it was Boiling Crab type of restaurant, and I was right! haha....
I took a look on their Yelp page. I like the combo meal deal.
Also the fact that they take reservation. Definitely will try this place. Maybe even this weekend!
Thank you for the info, Ashley!

  3. What a great find! Looks like I need to hit up this restaurant in O.C.
I wonder if the tendon was pre-cooked, such that it wouldn't take long to cook til tender in the broth?

Yup, it was, so was the intestine.
It didn't take too long for the tendon to become soft and yummy.
Hope you'll like this place on your next road trip!
