We visited Little Sheep Mongolian Hot Pot on a Friday night. It was 8:30pm and they were packed. Luckily since there were only 2 of us, we got seated quickly while the bigger parties all had to wait.

We ordered half spicy and half regular soup base. We love the flavor of their soup base. Lots of garlic and herbs.

Flavors of Laguna Tour (Part 1 of 2)

Flavors of Laguna
Laguna Beach, CA 92652
(949) 464-8830
http://www.flavorsoflaguna.com

Last weekend Dr. P and I went on the Flavors of Laguna tour in Laguna Beach. We go to Laguna Beach often, but always go to the same places. We were hoping to discover more neighborhood gems and learn more about this beautiful beach city from the tour. And we sure did!

Here are the places we visited:

Chips / Guacamole / Salsa

La Sirena Grill was our starting point. We started with homemade chips, salsa and guacamole. Their guacamole is seriously good!

[Huntington Beach] [Italian] Luna Rossa Ristorante

Luna Rossa
7821 Edinger Ave #110
Huntington Beach, CA 92647
(714) 890-9118
http://www.lunarossaristorante.com

We went on a double date with friends last weekend. My friend suggested we meet at Bella Terra for dinner, and she felt like having Italian. The choices were Macaroni Grill, Buca di Beppo, and Luna Rossa. I picked Luna Rossa because it is a smaller family owned restaurant. I always like those better than big chained restaurants.

Our waiter asked if it was our first time there, and gave us a brief introduction of the restaurant. The chef moved here from Rome about 5 years ago. Half of their pasta was made fresh daily, and if it's not freshly made, it was imported from Italy. Sounds good already!

I had too much fun talking and enjoying the night with friends, and didn't take much pictures. But I really want to write about this place because it is simply amazing!

Luna Rossa Le Pizza
Tomato sauce, mozzarella, mushrooms, olives and mixed vegetables

We opened a bottle of chanti and ordered a wood oven pizza as our starter. If you like vegetables, it is THE pizza to get! Lots of fresh and yummy vegetables on top of the delicious thin crust pizza. It was a huge pizza, and I believe it was $14. What a steal! The 4 of us only finished 1/2 pizza because we want to leave room for more food.

[Cook] Potato Frittata

This recipe is from I Love Trader Joe's College Cookbook. I'm long gone from college years, but that doesn't mean I don't still love cheap, easy and fast recipes and meal ideas catering for the young busy crowds. This cookbook has 150 super easy and fast recipes using products from Trader Joe's. I made the Potato Frittata for breakfast. It was super easy to make. It's pretty tasty with the addition of some ketchup and Tabasco sauce on top.

A frittata is akin to an omelet, except the ingredients are mixed with the eggs instead of folded inside of them - and it's a heck of a lot easier to make.

Potato Frittata

4 hashbrowns from frozen Trader Joe's Hashbrowns
1 tablespoon canola oil <---- I didn't use it since the hashbrowns are already oily
3 large eggs
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt <---- I used 1/4 teaspoon sea salt
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1/2 cup Trader Joe's Shredded Pepper Jack Cheese Blend <---- I used Soy-Sation Shredded Cheese Blend

[Cook] Sake to Mayonnaisu (Broiled Salmon with Mayonnaise)

I've had Sake to Mayonnaisu (Broiled Salmon with Mayonnaise) in restaurants before. Didn't know it was that simple to make. Salmon, salt, and mayo. That's pretty much all you need. I probably didn't leave the salmon in the oven long enough because the mayonnaise wasn't browned. But the fish smelt too good and we were too hungry. I am sure it'll look better and probably taste even better if the mayo is browned a bit more.

[Cook] Nasu no Agebitashi (Spicy Sweet-and-Sour Eggplant)

This recipe called for Japanese or Chinese eggplants. But I didn't find these at my local supermarket so I just used regular eggplants. Also I didn't deep fry the eggplants as instructed in the recipe. Instead I just used less oil and sauteed them in a wok. This dish tastes good even when it's cold. I didn't think this dish is spicy at all. But it was savory, sweet, and sour all at the same time. The flavor is quite addicting.

[Cook] Hiyayakko (Cold Tofu with Ginger and Green Onions)

This appetizer dish is super easy, and "should" taste good. But somehow the one I made was pretty horrible. It was so bad that I took one bite and the rest ended up in the trash can. The problem was the tofu. I bought all natural soft tofu from Sprouts (it is Sprouts store brand). Somehow this tofu just doesn't have the right flavor and texture. It tasted rough and had a bit sour taste to it. I have no idea why it was sour. The expiration date was 2 weeks away so I don't think the tofu had gone bad. But I will know not to buy tofu from Sprouts again (although it is still my favorite supermarket). I shall try this again with soft silky tofu from an Asian supermarket.

We haven't been to Original Pancake House for a while, and I really miss their yummy American breakfast.

We got there around 9-ish on this Saturday morning. Only had to wait for about 10 minutes for a table.

[Cook] Tamago Toji Jiru (Stirred Egg Soup)

Tamago Toji Jiru (Stirred Egg Soup) is a very fast and easy dish. In Chinese, we call this "egg flower soup". I made this soup for breakfast. I think it took me 5 minutes, and we had a simple yet delicious soup. The recipe is for 1 bowl of soup. But you can simply double the amount to make soup for 2 as I did (or for 4 or 8 as you like).

Tamago Toji Jiru (Stirred Egg Soup)

[Cook] Kabocha Nimono (Sweet Simmered Pumpkin)

It was my first time cooking kabocha pumpkin. I had such a hard time to cut the pumpkin in half. I asked my sister about it. Her tip was to place the pumpkin in the microwave for a few seconds. I shall try that next time. The sweet simmered pumpkin was soft, sweet, and very yummy.

Kabocha Nimono (Sweet Simmered Pumpkin)

4th of July BBQ

This 4th of July, just as every 4th of July, we went to mother-in-law's house for BBQ with the family.

We took Teddy and Twinkle with us of course.

[Cook] Toriniku Kara-age (Fried Marinated Chicken)

I am disappointed at how Toriniku Kara-age turned out. The chicken turned out to be too salty. I would suggest making this recipe with less sodium soy sauce. But other than the saltiness, it was still pretty tasty. I just had to eat it with rice.

On Tuesday, Little Sheep Mongolian Hot Pot has $20 all you can eat special. Since Wednesday is a holiday, we decided to drive all the way up to Hacienda Heights for the AYCE deal. We got there around 7-ish. The hostess turned us away as there were already too many people on the waiting list. Oh well, so we decided to go to the nearby Flaming Spice for AYCE spicy hot pot.

We had to wait for about 15 minutes for a table. A sneaky Chinese lady actually tried to "cut us in line" on the signing waiting list. She put her name on a separate sheet of paper, then put that piece of paper on top of the original waiting list where everyone had their names on it. Dr. P saw the whole thing and called her out for it. She just kept on saying to us "don't worry, you go first you go first." Ahhhh.... rude!

[Cook] Oyako Donburi (Chicken and Egg Rice Bowl)

This week I am cooking Japanese Food. I have this cookbook "Let's Cook Japanese Food" for a while, but haven't tried any recipe from it yet. This cookbook is written by a Caucasian lady who married a Japanese man and moved to Japan. She learned how to cook Japanese food while living abroad and from her Japanese parents-in-law. The first recipe I made was Oyako Donburi, and it was a huge success. The chicken and egg rice bowl tasted even better than the ones we've had from Japanese restaurant!

鹹豆漿 Salty Soy Milk

I got Salty Soy Milk and Salty Rice Roll. These two are my favorite Chinese breakfast items. I was quite disappointed at my breakfast though. The salty soy milk's flavor tasted like it was missing something. There wasn't enough green onion, and they've omit the pickled veggies (榨菜). Instead, it was just filled with soggy fried Chinese donut (油條) pieces.

Santa Barbara style Charburger Meal ($8.70)

Dr. P ordered a secret menu item: Santa Barbara style Charburger. The double patties burger was made with grilled sourdough bread, Swiss cheeses, grilled onion and guacamole. It tasted so good, but probably has 4,000 calories or something like that.

My Hubby's Meals

I like cooking. Cooking for myself is fun, and cooking for others brings me even more joy. I cook for my husband everyday, not that I have to, but I want to. A few of my coworkers said to me, "Why do you do that? What is wrong with you? Why don't you just eat out like 'NORMAL' people do? It's cheaper eating out and save time."  I can't believe that is what people think! (Or is that just how Orange County Asian women think?) Cooking at home is not only way cheaper than eating out, it is also healthier and save more time.

Dr. P and I love going out to eat. But we enjoy cooking at home just as much. Now because of our busy work schedule, we cook at home most weekdays, and go out for dinner on weekends. On a weekday, I make breakfast in the morning, and also pack lunch for both Dr. P and I. If I know Dr. P has to work late for the day, I'll prepare dinner and pack it for him in the morning as well. Otherwise, I'll make a quick meal after I get home from work. Our weekday meals are always easy and fast to make. I like to limit cooking time to about 30 minutes.

Here are Dr. P's one day meals:

Breakfast

A simple pan fried egg, Trader Joe's potatoes, donut peach from my parents backyard, and leftover bread from CPK. Simple, filling, and yummy. Probably took me 10 minutes to make this plate.

[Cook] Banana Bread Muffins

I think I am getting better and better at baking. This banana bread muffins turned to be perfect! I had one when it was still warm. The crust was slightly crunchy. When it cooled, the outer layer became soft and moist. It was still really good. I brought some to work, and co-workers have requested that I make it again soon. :-)

Banana Bread Muffins

9 ounces all-purpose flour (about 2 cups)
1 cup sugar
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt

[Cook] Chicken Noodle Soup

I love Costco's rotisserie chicken. We often eat 1/2 chicken on the day we buy it. Then I'll cut the meat off the bones, and use it to make fried rice, tacos, stir-fried dishes, scrambled eggs... etc. There are so many things you can do with cooked rotisserie chicken! And do not throw the bones away! I always use the bones to make chicken soup. The soup is easy, fast, nutritious, and tastes good. One night I made chicken noodle soup with leftover bones in 20 minutes.

Napa Burger w/ Garlic Fries ($8.95)
Fresh goat cheese, tomato, red onion, baby spinach, basil pesto aioli.

I recommended her to try my favorite burger, Napa burger. We added $1.20 to order a side of Garlic Fries. The fries smelt really good, but it was way way way too oily.

Greek Pizza

She ordered a slice of Greek Pizza from the heated display case, and concluded it was a waste of money. The pizza probably had been sitting there for quite a while. It was a bit dry, and didn't taste fresh. Oh well.

I went to Flaming Spice for lunch before, and hated the place. Their lunch special was pretty stupid. You get an individual hot pot for about $10, but there's nothing in it except the soup base. My friends picked Flaming Spice to do our dinner gathering. I was hoping their all you can eat dinner would be better than my last experience. And I ended up loving this place!

All You Can Eat ($19.99/person)

All you can eat is $19.99 per person. There were 6 of us, and they served us with two pots. So we picked 4 different soup base. Dr. P and I shared one pot by ourselves. We ordered the Beer Duck soup and Oxtail Soup. Both were really good. And there were quite a few pieces of duck and oxtail in the soup base.

小菜三拼 3 Items Combo Appetizer

3 Items Combo Appetizers comes with sauteed greens, peanuts, and salted duck. But my dad asked to have the seaweed instead of duck. I liked all 3 appetizers very much.

[Cook] Savory Cornmeal Waffles

I didn't like the Savory Cornmeal Waffles too much. I used coarse cornmeal, which was probably why the waffles had hard pieces of cornmeal in it. Hmmm.... I shall try this again with fine cornmeal.

Savory Cornmeal Waffles

1 cup multi-grain pancake and waffle mix
1/3 cup yellow cornmeal
1 cup club soda
1 tablespoon canola oil
2 egg whites
1 tablespoon butter
1 chopped plum tomato
1 cup frozen corn kernels
1/3 cup sliced spinach
1/4 cup sliced green onions
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

[Cook] Feta-Beef Patties with Cucumber Sauce

Dr. P said this was the best beef patty he's ever had. I don't want to be conceited, but it was pretty damn good. haha.... And it was so easy to make with just a few ingredients. I served it with salad and pita bread. But of course you can serve it with hamburger buns with lettuce, tomato and onion.

Feta-Beef Patties with Cucumber Sauce

1 lb ground beef
1/4 cup crumbled feta cheese
1 teaspoon dried oregano
2 garlic cloves, minced
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper

[Cook] Chicken Salad with Black Bean-Corn Relish
