[Los Angeles] [Japanese] 鮨元 Sushi Gen

We had plan to have a sibling lunch with my sister and brother.  My sister was craving for Japanese so I suggested lunch at Sushi Gen.  Usually I like to go to Sushi Gen super early and wait for them to open the door.  But my brother works graveyard shift and cannot wake up that early.  We got to Sushi Gen around 1:30pm, and only had to wait for about 20  minutes for a table.

Miso Soup / Sunomono / Tofu

We ordered 3 lunch entrees.  Each entree came with a bowl of miso soup, small plate of sunomono, and tofu.  I remember the tofu I had before had a very tasty stew sauce.  But this time, the tofu was rather bland.  The sauce had no flavor at all.

Sashimi ($15.00)

We ordered 2 Sashimi.  My brother had his own, and my sister and I shared one.  Everything on the plate was super fresh and delicious.  My brother came to Sushi Gen before and had sushi set.  He didn't think the sushi set was memorable.  But he said the sashimi not only tastes better, but it's also a better deal.  My sister tried Sushi Gen for the first time.  She said she will never have Japanese food in SGV area again.  A lot of the Japanese restaurants in SGV are not Japanese owned, and the fish is not as fresh.

Sashimi Appetizer

We also ordered Grilled Salmon Collar to share among the 3 of us.  The salmon came with sashimi appetizer.

Grilled Salmon Collar ($15.00)

We had to wait a little longer for the Grilled Salmon Collar, but it was well worth the wait.  The collar had so much soft and tender meat.  The ponzu sauce with scallion and daikon was a perfect dipping sauce for the meat.  The citrus flavor in the sauce was a perfect balance to the fattiness of the fish.  We all love this dish.

Delicious and healthy lunch!  We enjoyed everything.

  3. Food cost in Japanese restaurant(NON JAPANESE OWNER )is about 20-25%
fresh tuna VS Frozen tuna cube cost is double

you can guess what you having at SGV

I feel that Japanese owned restaurant has higher quality food.
While non-Japanese owned Japanese restaurants are about saving on cost and try to make as much money as they can.

  4. I can't do Sushi Gen. Every time I visit, the feeling of a cow being herded to the slaughter house envelopes me. Too many people, too loud, too much wait. For a few dollars more, I'd rather have a relaxing meal at Toshi Sushi down the street time & again.

I've never heard of Toshi Sushi.
I'm going to look them up and try next time! Thanks, SinoSoul!

  5. I've been dying to try Sushi Gen, but never get the chance. We have to go to work on the weekdays, and now with the kids, I just don't think we have the chance to go there anymore. >_< (sad)

Too bad they are not opened on weekend for lunch.
I guess you'll just have to skip work one day. haha... I'm such a bad influence.
