We tried Don the Beachcomber for another Groupon deal.  We got a $50 gift certificate for $25 at this Hawaiian tiki style restaurant.

Don the Beachcomber is located right on Pacific Coast Highway.  The drive along the coastline was really nice.

The restaurant is divided into a few different dining room.  We were seated in the brighter and quieter room.  The room has lots of tiki style decoration.  I felt like I was dining in a restaurant on some tropical island.

Don's Own Mai Tai ($8.00)

Everybody was drinking Mai Tai in the restaurant.  Our waiter told us their Mai Tai has the same recipe for the past 20 something years.  We gotta try it!  I tasted so many different flavor with one sip of the Mai Tai.  I actually found the recipe online.

Don the Beachcomber Mai Tai

This version is much closer to what Don the Beachcomber served in his restaurants. It can be garnished with various fruits, as in the above recipe. Falernum, which is now difficult to obtain in the United States except from a single supplier in Seattle, is a flavored Caribbean syrup with a very different taste from the Orgeat syrup used in the Maitai #1.

* 2 oz (or 1/4 cup) water
* 3/4 oz or 1-1/2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
* 1 oz or 2 tablespoons fresh grapefruit juice
* 1 oz or 2 tablespoons sugar syrup
* 1 oz or 2 tablespoons dark rum
* 1-1/2 oz or 3 tablespoons golden rum
* 1/2 oz or 1 tablespoon Cointreau or triple Sec
* 1/4 oz or 1/2 tablespoon Falernum syrup
* 2 dashes or scant 1/2 teaspoon Angostura bitters
* 1 dash or scant 1/4 teaspoon Pernod or other anisette-flavored pastis

Shake all the ingredients in a shaker with ice and strain into a tall highball glass filled with crushed ice. Garnish with fruits and serve with a straw.

The restaurant offers a 3 course prix fixe menu for $30.  It's a pretty good deal if comparing to the normal prices on the regular menu.  But we didn't find the offering dishes interesting enough, and opted to order from the regular menu.

Hawaiian Rolls

The bread was Hawaiian Rolls.  They were fluffy, soft, and slightly sweet.

Co-Co- Nuts Shrimp ($13.00)
Hand breaded with a delicate crust of toasty coconut. Served with sweet-spicy jalapeno & mango chutney

We ordered Co-Co-Nuts Shrimp for appetizer.  The shrimp on the skewer had a crispy coconut crust.  The jalapeno and mango chutney for dipping was super yummy.  It was spicy and sweet, just how I like it.  There were also pieces of Hawaiian pickled mango in the dip.  The salad that came with the shrimp was also very tasty.  This dish can also be ordered as an entree for $5 more.  The entree came with sauteed vegetable and rice.

Sticky Ribs - Full Rack ($25.00)
Tender Baby Back Ribs glazed in our house ginger BBQ sauce. Accompanied by garlic mashed potatoes & Cole slaw

Dr. P ordered a full rack of Sticky Ribs.  The ribs were tender.  The ginger BBQ sauce was on the heavy side.  But the light garlic mashed potatoes and Cole slaw complimented the ribs well.  A full rack was really a big order.  Dr. P didn't even finish 1/2 rack and was already full.

Seared Ahi ($19.00)
Citrus & sesame crusted sushi grade Ahi seared rare. Served with jasmine rice and sauteed spinach

I ordered Seared Ahi.  The Ahi tuna was cooked on the outside, and rare on the inside.  The citrus sauce has pieces of mango in it.  Sauteed spinach was really tasty.  Everything on the plate was delicious.

Pineapple Upside Down Cake ($9.00)

Pineapple Upside Down Cake for dessert.  I LOVE it!  The warm cake was moist and sweet, and it tasted so good with icy cold vanilla ice cream.

The food is really good at Don the Beachcomber.  Our server was really on top of everything also.  He was friendly and polite, very knowledgeable of the food, and very attentive and fast.  We really enjoyed our Hawaiian dinner at Don the beachcomber.

We walked by this other darker dining room on our way out.  There are some island rock with parrot fixture thinging on one wall.  Quite interesting.

We also walked by the dark tiki bar.

We like this place.  Will be back soon!

  1. Eileen, have you ever dined at The Bahooka on Rosemead Blvd in the SGV? I grew up in nearby Monterey Park and loved going to that Tiki's-style restaurant/bar because of its decor, huge fishtank, brightly-colored Polynesian drinks, and pretty good food. I haven't been back in 20 years, but its still in business.

Yup, I've been to The Bahooka about 20 years ago also.
I didn't remember much about the food, but I remember the giant fish tanks throughout the restaurant.
Would love to go back again.
