[Temple City] [Chinese] Happy Noodle

Happy Noodle was one of my parents' favorite restaurant.  The fried buns and dumplings were great last time I went there with them.  We went back to Happy Noodle last Thursday.  The food was so disappointing that my parents had vowed to never go back again.

Sour Vegetable Lamb Casserole ($8.95)

The meal started out with Sour Vegetable Lamb Casserole.  Tender slices of lamb (but with lots of fat), tofu, glass noodle, and sour cabbage in the soup.  We all enjoyed the soup.  This was the only one dish that we were fully satisfied with.

Pumpkin Steam Dumplings (10) ($5.95)

The Pumpkin Steam Dumplings had absolutely no pumpkin in it.  It was just vegetarian steam dumplings.  It was good, but the size was about 1/2 of what it used to be.  We weren't too happy about that.

Mushroom, zucchini, and glass noodle were inside the dumpling.  No pumpkin.  They really should just change the name.

Mixed 3 Items Fried Stuffed Bun (8) ($6.50)

As soon as the Mixed 3 Items Fried Stuffed Bun was brought to our table, my dad asked the waitress, "how come the dumplings and buns are so small now?  Only about 1/2 of what they used to be...."  The waitress answered, "No, that's not true.  They are the same size as before.  We just made the skin of the dumplings and buns thinner because a lot of customers request to have it that way."  Hmmmm....  I am not sure if I believe her.  And I don't like it when people lie in your face like that.  She could simply said something about the bad economy and I would totally understand.

The filling shrank big time.  Before it took me 5 or 6 bites to finish one bun.  Now, 2 bites, gone.  Not to mention, the taste was not exactly right, either.  The filling was too salty that day.

Dan Dan Noodle ($5.95)

Dan Dan Noodle looked pretty good.  Lot of minced pork, some shredded cucumber, with spicy sauce under the noodle.

This Dan Dan Noodle was spicy, way too spicy.  But it wasn't the flavorful kind of spicy.  They added too much Sichuan pepper, and that was the only thing we could taste.  It made my lips and tongue really numb.  But other than the numbness, I didn't even taste anything.  The spiciness and numbness really should be in balance with each other.  I did like the chewy noodle though.

The food was disappointing enough, but the bill made me even more mad.  I CAN NOT stand restaurants that round off the bill by ADDING money to the correct amount.  Even though it was just $0.40 they added to our bill, to me that was still cheating!  Oh I hate that with a passion.  So Happy Noodle didn't make us happy at all.  We will never be back again.

  3. Wow, not only was the food bad, but that's sooooooo wrong what they did with the bill! Did you say something to them? I would be really mad, too. Never, EVER round up someone's bill!

I didn't notice the bill until I saw the photo at http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com.
Rounding off bill by subtracting a few $$ is perfectly fine ($10.05-->$10.00)
But adding $$ to it is just wrong ($9.95-->$10.00)

  4. Wow! They even did that with the check? Automatic hands up if that was me. I would flag them down and say the person calculated the check wrong.

This is interesting. I just saw a Happy Noodle person on TV today. Probably from this place...

Yup, that did it for me. Never going back again.

  8. So do you think it's cuz Happy Noodle changed owners? Or are they the same owners, just not happy any more?

haha My dad said the owner is still the same person. He's also the cook.

  9. Just being there a week before. There is always crowded and not much parking space. Try their beef noodel and shrimp dumping. IMO noodel just average and dumping below. Spicy but too salty(MSG?) Don't notice about the bill as they hand writing and just pay it and left. Should be more careful next time.

This place has gone downhill. We used to like the place when it first opened.
But now I don't think we'll ever go back again.
