Bye Bye Wisdom Teeth x 4

I had my wisdom teeth pulled this afternoon. All 4 of them. It didn't hurt at all at the dentist. But when I saw the tools and felt how the doctor was drilling and cutting my stubborn teeth in half, I got so scared that I actually cried. I can't believe I am 36 but still acted like 6. The doctor assured me I was doing a good job while the nurse wiped the tears off my face. I think they almost gave me a lollipop. 3 hours later, I saw my broken wisdom teeth on the tray, and secretly cursed at them in silence. Bye bye wisdom teeth. I am glad you are gone forever!

My entire face, tongue, even my ears felt numb from novocain after the procedure. I don't really know why but when your face, lip, and tongue are numb, they feel fat, like really really fat. But when you look in the mirror, they look normal. Even when you touch them, they feel fat in your hands. You guys ever had the same experience?

One hour later, the numbness started going away. But it was pain that replaced the numbness. I changed the bloody gauze from my mouth, then all of a sudden, severe pain hit me. It hurt so bad that tears immediately dropped down my face. I had to lean over the counter to hold myself up. It hurt so bad that I want to just roll around on the ground. OMG I don't think I've ever experience pain like that. I couldn't help but just kept on crying and whimpering, while Teddy and Twinkle kept on trying to lick me. So sweet of them!

I tried to take Motrin, which the doctor prescribed. But even swallowing water hurt too bad. I used my saliva to swallow the second tab. One hour later, the pain is still there, and not getting better at all. The nice dentist actually just called right now to check up on me. I told him how bad it was hurting. Now he's going to give me Vicodin. Now I'm looking forward to get rid of the pain and be in la-la-land for the next few days.

Some people think pulling all 4 teeth at one time is crazy. But I only want to suffer once and get it over with. I think I'm going to go rest while waiting for Dr. P to bring home the Vicodin for me. Glad I ate as much as I could before going to the dentist.

  1. I have all four wisdom teeth extracted at same time too. I can't remember anything during the surgery , since i have sedation.

I have experienced pain, ibuprofen won't work for it, it stop the pain like 4 days. it totally took 2 weeks to recover it all.

It's been 3 days and I am still hurting pretty bad.
    The painkiller definitely helped. :-(

  2. I had 3 pulled at once when I was 18 (I was born with only 3). They were impacted, so it was done in the hospital under general anesthesia. Even so, I was in a lot of pain after I woke up. I can't imagine having all 4 out at once in the dentist's office. After 24 hours, I felt much better and I'm sure you will too. Hang in there!

Lucky you! Only had 3 wisdom teeth!
Also I think if you get them pulled out when you're younger, recovery time is shorter.
I wished I've done it when I was younger...

  3. I feel so bad for you, and I wish you well (take lots of Vicodin!).

    Vicodin helped a lot!
One tab lasts about 4 hours for me.
But I know taking too many is not good.
So I try to take it every 5 or 6 hours.
The pain is more bearable than the first day now.

  4. Hi Eileen
    hope you feel better sweetie.

I actually work as an assistant at a dental office.
Its funny though cuz most dentists would encourage you to pull all 4 wisdom teeth at once.
But honestly, unless they are pushing or hurting you. You dont have to.
I got my upper wisdom teeth out at different time. They weren't too difficult (still impacted but not growing too horizontal). My dentist only took less than 15 mins each to remove them.

I dont know if you are still experiencing bleeding. If you changes your gauze every 45 mins -an hour. Check the mirror at the extraction if there is still blood flow, and not the gauze. If bleedin dont stop, you can actually wet a tea bag with cold water and bite it at the extracted wounds for 5-15 mins. Its very bitter but it stop the bleeding.

Other things that might be helpful:
1.) Dont use straws thinking is better than opening your mouth. The sucking motion will actually start the bleeding again.
2.) Remember to place a towel on your pillow...during the night it might bleed a bit onto your pillowcase.
3.) No hot temperature food yet...to avoid bleeding and pain.
    4.) Vicodin hahaha

    Feel better *Hug*

My dentist did one side first, and asked if I want to continue going.
I thought I just want to get it done at once and get over it.
I'm really glad I did all 4 at one time because I definitely would not want to go through this again!
Thank you sooooo much for the tea bag tip.
I was still bleeding the next morning when I woke up.
I tried the tea bag trick and the bleeding stopped in 15 minutes!
I also followed all your tips, which is the same as what the doctor told me.
    Thank you thank you~~~~ :-)

  5. I had mine pulled 2 at a time. My dentist was really good, the teeth came out really fast. I had some pain killers afterward, slept off 2 hours and I was fine. Also you are supposed to gargle with salt water to prevent infection. That was actually the worse part than the teeth pulling for me. Salt water was so gross! And I totally agree with feeling fat while you face and lips feeling numb, even though it doesn't look like it. I hope you will be pain free and have a fast recovery.

2 hours and you were fine? Wow!
    It's been 2 days and I'm still hurting... :-(
I am doing the salt water rinse every few hours or so.
You're right. Salt water doesn't taste all that great. haha...

  6. Wow, sounds so painful! :( Hope you feel better soon! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones.. I only have 1 wisdom tooth so it was easy breezy when I had to get it taken out. That's so sweet of your dogs trying to comfort you, they're so cute!!!

    One only? Lucky girl!!
Yeah Teddy and Twinkle are really sweet.
They stayed in bed all day with me, too.
    They're the best dogs!

  7. Awww, sorry you had to go through this, Eileen! I had my wisdom teeth (all 4) pulled out half a year ago, so I can relate. I got laughing gas though so I wasn't scared, more like sleepy. It did hurt like hell though afterwards. My oral surgeon automatically gave me a Vicodin prescription and I got it filled just in case, but I didn't end up using it. Rest, drink lots of fluids, and the pain will eventually go away. :)

And by the way, I absolutely hate the feeling of Novocaine. I get that cold, fat-lipped feeling too and I can't stand it.

I hate that numb and fat feeling, too!
I couldn't talk, and felt like I was drooling.
How long did the pain last for you?
It's been 3 days and I am still hurting a lot.
    Pain pain go away already!

  8. You poor thing! I had all 4 taken out at once too. But they were all impacted so I was knocked unconscious for the procedure. You are so brave!

I kinda wished I was knocked out, too.
I was so scared and nervous sitting in that chair.
The dental office I went to was quite nice.
They have TV/DVD with headphone and massage dental chair.
My dentist asked me to put on the headphone and he turned the volume up so I wouldn't hear the dental machine sounds.
The DVD I watched was Take The Lead. So lots of music and dancing to distract me.
The dental chair kept on vibrating, which was a good distraction, too.
But at one point, my nerve still got me.
If I can choose again (but so glad I don't have to), I probably will want to be knocked out completely. haha...

  9. Aww, Eileen! I hope by now you're feeling a bit better. I got all four of my wisdom teeth pulled at the same time during first year of college, so I was...18? It was during spring break, and I had the same procedure as you, the dentist (actually I believe he was a dental surgeon, he wasn't just a regular dentist) had to cut my teeth in half before extracting them. I was "supposed" to go to sleep, but I remember I was hazily awake throughout the entire procedure! The funky part was that I felt a LOT of pressure but no pain during the extraction...Pretty freaky.

Of course, after the procedure, I had a mouthful of gauze and couldn't really eat at all for several days. I remember I was so freaked out that food/bacteria was going to get stuck in the holes! I think as long as you rinse well after eating, you should be fine.

OH and the worst part was yet to come! My cheeks SWELLED up like crazy!!! I seriously had major chipmunk-cheeks for a week (and my brother, who got the procedure the same time I did, didn't experience this at all!!!).

Anyway Eileen, stay strong and you'll get better in no time! :)

Good you got it done when you were 18.
I think people heal faster when they're younger.
But now good that most of us even have to go through this.
Seriously, this is like the worst experience of my life!
Since I was awake, I also felt A LOT of pressure, but no pain.
At one point, I felt the doctor was going to rip my jaws apart when he was pulling.
My cheeks also swelled like chipmunk.
Dr. P asked me where were my nuts the next morning when he saw me. haha....
It's now Sunday, and I am feeling a bit better, although I still have some pain and discomfort.
Also I think I must have food stuck in the "holes" because I had a bad/rotten taste in my mouth.
I tried rinsing with salt water but that only helped a little.
I read online how people clean out the holes with oral syringe.
I have follow-up appointment tomorrow. I will ask my dentist to clean out the holes for me.
Now I am afraid to eat anything because I don't want any more food get stuck in there.
Ahhhhhh how long does it take to completely heal?

  10. I got all 4 of mine pulled too but in three trips. Can you imagine how horrible that is? It's bad enough going once, but I was shaking each time that I had to come back! haha

I didn't get be put to sleep either. Would have been nice but at the same time it costs a lot more money and a little more unsafe so it's a trade off I guess. I read your reply to someone about how you got the massage chair and loud music! Wow, that sounds great. For me I just had a cheap Asian place with no bells and whistles so I basically got to hear all of the drilling and cracking inside my head... It's sooo scary I always felt like I couldn't breathe out of fear.

I'm so glad it's over, FOREVER now. Aren't you glad too? :)

YES! So So So So So glad I don't have to do this again.
But now I kinda wish I just left my wisdom teeth alone and didn't pull them.
Or wish I did this when I was much younger.
Oh well, at least it is done.
    Worst experience of my life!!!!

  11. Dear Eileen, so sorry to hear that you were going through so much pain. I got all 4 of them pulled as well, and I asked to be completely knocked out so I did not know anything. After the surgery, I followed the instructions carefully to let the blood clog form and only had baby food for 3 days. So I did not really feel much pain and only used pain killers for 3 days. Afterwards, I was fine. I am worrying that in your case, blood clogs did not form quickly and that is why you are going through so much pain. You definitely want the dentist to check that for you carefully!

    I am worried, too!
I read about "dry socket". Hope I don't have that.
I am going to the dentist today to see if everything is ok.

  12. Commenting again here: Glad you're feeling better! Yeah, I also remember the bad breath thing from possible food decaying in there! Pretty gross, isn't it? I got this procedure done because I had braces as a kid and I didn't want my teeth to keep moving. I have to say NOW, I'm very glad that I got this done (straight teeth are very important to me, LOL), but, during that time, I remember that I would get minor infections in the cut areas of my gums even after they have closed up somewhat...NOT fun. That was ongoing for a while (these were very minor, didn't need to go see a dentist), but I think you just need to be careful about eating and make sure you rinse very well after eating for several months...At least, that was my experience. *hugs*

YES! That rotten taste and smell is a nightmare.
I found out yesterday that it was a little piece of gauze that got stuck in one of the "hole".
When I pulled it out, it smelt like death seriously!
Now that nasty piece of gauze is out, I feel MUCH MUCH better.
I'll also ask the dentist to clean all the areas for me today.
Aren't you glad you got it done when you were a kid? I wish I did!

  13. i pulled one like 5 years ago and there is still a hole where the dentist cut which food gets stuck in.. :( i still need to pull the other 3 :(

Don't do it if you don't need to!!
I kinda regret getting mine pulled. So painful!
I had such a miserable week. Now it's week 2 and I'm still in some pain.
And you know how much I love to eat.
It's such a torture when Dr. P's eating a burger and I can only watch.
