I like to try food from different country.  When I saw one of this 1/2 half deal for Mitze's Kountry Kitchen on one of those Gorupon similar website, I bought it right away because I don't think I've had Colombian food before.  We love all the food we had during our honeymoon in Costa Rica.  I wonder if Colombian food tastes similar to that?

It's not a big restaurant.  We went during lunch hour, and the place was empty with only one table of guests.  The waitress was very nice and friendly.  The owner also came out and greeted us, which was nice.  They actually have two menus, one for traditional Colombian food, one for typical American food like sandwiches and burgers and stuff.  Of course we were only interested in the Colombian menu.

Empanadas - Meat Pies ($1.50/each)

We started the meal with two empanadas.  It was VERY greasy.

The empanadas were filled with ground meat and potatoes.  It didn't have much flavor, didn't have a lot of fillings, and it was way way way too oily.  We didn't like the empanadas at all.

Sobrebarriga En Salsa – (Brisket in sauce) ($9.75)
Servida con arroz, yuca, plátano madura y ensalada.
Flank steak served in a delicious tomato sauce accompanied by white rice, cassava, fried sweet plantain and a salad.

Dr. P ordered brisket in sauce.  It was served with side salad, rice, plantain, and hair.  Yup, hair.  Dr. P found a hair inside his salad.  We told the waitress about it, and she apologized, but that was it.  The brisket was bit tough.  The sauce, I don't know, it wasn't bad, but wasn't great either.  Plantain was good, but again, on the oily side.

Bandeja Paisa – (Country Dinner) ($10.00)
Fréjol Colombiano, arroz, plátano maduro, carne, chorizo, arepa, huevo, aguacate y chicharrón.
Colombian beans, white rice, fried sweet plantain, beef, sausage, arepa, egg, avocado, and pork crackling.

I ordered Bandeja Paisa, which was a combination dish.  I assumed it was like a sampler of Colombian food.  I like the different variety of food on my dish.  The beef tasted like carne asada.  Much much better than Dr. P's brisket.  Chorizo sausage was tasty.  The beans were pretty good.  I didn't care too much for the pork crackling though.  It tasted too oily.  I don't think this place knows how to do their fried stuff right.  Everything was just too oily, or is that the Colombian style?

We are not sure if we like Colombian food.  If Mitze's Kountry Kitchen's food is exactly how Colombian food should taste like, then we don't like it.  But since we haven't tried it before, we can't really compare it to anything else.  So I don't want to jump into conclusion and say I don't like Colombian food.  I just know I probably won't return to Mitze's again.
