Last time we visited Green Island Restaurant, mom liked it a lot, and dad thought it was just alright.  I like their curry chicken the most.  We went back to Green Island for lunch on a Monday.

石燒黑豚肉大白菜 Black Pork Belly with Bok Choi in Hot Pot ($4.99)

Everyday they offer a dish with special price.  On Monday, the dish is Black Pork Belly with Bok Choi in Hot Pot.  It said "bok choi" on the menu, but it was actually napa cabbage.  It was a really simple dish.  Just like the name implied, there was pork, and there was cabbage.  The taste was just ok.  I think anybody can easily make this dish at http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com, and probably would taste even better.

綠島滋味雞 House Special Chicken ($7.49)

At first we wanted to order the curry chicken that we loved from last time.  But then we thought maybe we'll try a new dish.  We ordered House Special Chicken because if they call it "house special", it must be a dish they the restaurant is really proud of.  It was pretty much 1/2 chicken with green onion and oil (蔥油雞).  It was a small chicken.  The meat was tender.  And I like their green onion sauce a lot.  But we all agreed that the curry chicken was better.

綠島牛柳粒 House Special Pepper Steaks ($7.49)

Another "House Special" item.  I was expecting the House Special Pepper Steaks to taste like all the black pepper steaks I had in Chinese restaurant.  But Green Island's version was different, and different in a not so good way.  I really don't know what it was, but the taste was really off.  It had a lot of sour flavor in the meat.  Was it lemon?  Was it vinegar?  I wasn't sure, but I didn't like it.  The meat was cooked perfectly though.  Very tender.  Just we didn't like the flavor at all.

臘味煲仔飯 Preserved Meat with Rice Hot Pot ($5.99)

Preserved Meat with Rice Hot Pot required extra 20 minutes for them to make it.  We all like the rice.  The preserved sausage was tasty.  And I really like mixing the rice with Maggi seasoning sauce.

This visit was a little disappointing.  Dad said he doesn't want to come back again.  He said there are a lot more Chinese restaurants that serves better food with cheaper price.  But mom and I would still come back again.  We probably won't order the same dishes that we ordered this time, and definitely will order their curry chicken again.

  1. I agree, the dishes you ordered this time were not the best of the menu items. The house special chicken I do like, however it has seemed to change to not be as good as before- before the meat was colder and it was more tender and not as salty as it is now (not too salty now anyway...but less salt than that). The chicken does look small to me actually in your photos compared to my photos and previous experiences. Do love the green onion sauce though! The black pork belly dish is okay, but not spectacular. The rest are so so in my opinion.

Just want to tell you that if you go there again their clams are not very good in my opinion- they still taste raw although their shells are open! I love their oxtails though. Very, very delicious- especially that sauce.

We were deciding between oxtail and pepper steaks.
    We should've order the oxtail!!

  2. I tried this restaurant with my family after you wrote about it last night, I find the dishes to be very bland, and not that cheap IMO.

So far the only dish we really enjoyed was the curry chicken.
Yeah their price is not that cheap at all.

  3. I really, really loved the place the first time I went. Subsequent times have not come up to that first time, though the curry is really very nice. However the lychee and red date hot tea drink will have me going back again and again. So comforting. The rib eye fried rice is also super good and I remember really liking some of the veggie dishes, can't remember exactly, something like gai lan with pork belly, perhaps?

They are opening a new location on Atalntic in Monterey Park.
It's that new shopping plaza with movie theater between Valley and Garvey.
