[Irvine] [Chinese] S.W. Seafood & BBQ Restaurant

S.W. Seafood & BBQ Restaurant

I always see a lot of people getting take out from S.W. Seafood & BBQ Restaurant.  So I assume the food must be pretty good and wanted to try this place.  Well, I learned that my assumption was wrong.

This place is obviously trying to rip off Sam Woo's name.  Their English name is S.W., and their Chinese name sounds just like Sam Woo's Chinese name but with different characters.  What a copycat!  I should've seen that as a warning sign.

酸辣湯 Hot and Sour Soup ($7.50)

Dr. P was craving for Hot and Sour Soup.  I was opposing of ordering because I thought $7.50 was expensive for soup.  This Hot and Sour Soup turned out to be the best dish of the night.  They used Chinese pickled vegetable (榨菜) in the soup.  It was pretty good.

三拼 (燒鴨、油雞、燒肉) Three Delicacy Combination Platter (Roast Duck, Soy Sauce Chicken, Roast Pork) ($11.95)

Since it was a Cantonese BBQ restaurant, we ordered the Three Delicacy BBQ Combination Platter to try their BBQ.  We picked roasted duck, soy sauce chicken and roasted pork.  The duck and the chicken was acceptable, but it had a lot of fat.  Still, nothing compared to how fat the roasted pork was.  There were only like 6 or 7 pieces of roasted pork.  And most of the pieces were just pure fat with no lean meat.  It was barely edible.

沙茶肥牛粉絲煲 Rice Vermicelli & Beef with Satay Sauce in Hot Pot ($11.95)

Rice Vermicelli & Beef with Satay Sauce in Hot Pot wasn't good.  The beef was fat.  Actually it wasn't even beef with fat.  It was full of pieces of pure slices of fat from beef.  It was disgusting.  There weren't enough satay flavor in the sauce, either.

X.O. 爆斑片 Deep Fried Fillet of Sole with X.O. Sauce ($9.95)

Deep Fried Fillet of Sole with X.O. Sauce was horrible.  The deep fried fish was oily.  There wasn't enough X.O. Sauce for flavor.  It was just bad.

紅豆湯 Red Bean Soup

We got complimentary sweet Red Bean Soup for dessert.  It even had some boba in the soup.  I like it.

The food at S.W. was pretty bad.  And all those bad food cost us about $50!  Horrible!  Ok.... so I guess we'll never go back there again.  I'd much rather go to the real Sam Woo next time.

  2. I was never really a big fan of Sam Woo but their franchise is pretty well known in the US so I guess they must have done something right.

And regarding the name thing. I've found that most Chinese restaurants in the San Gabriel Valley area uses names of restaurants in Hong Kong. So most of them are "copycats." So it's probably best not to judge a restaurant's quality by its names. However...I've found that most restaurants that uses "authentic" or "Chinese food" in their restaurant name are probably not "authentic."

haha that's so true. When restaurants try to claim that they are "authentic", they are usually not.

  3. I lived in Mission Viejo for 18 yrs, and suffered for expansive bad Chinese food for 18 years. Need I say more.

Awww.... that's sad. But I know what you mean now.
We need some good Chinese restaurants in OC just like SGV!
