None of us have been to San Mateo before. None of us knows the area. So my parents ask me to find a few places to eat around the hotel. After reviewing various websites, I found Crouching Tiger Restaurant. It's a Szechuan restaurant with pretty good reviews on a lot of websites. My dad loves spicy food. When I told him about the few restaurants I had in mind for dinner tonight, he immediately picked Crouching Tiger.
The restaurant is located in the city of Redwood City, which is about 6 miles south of San Mateo. We found free public parking, and walked down the oldtown style street to the restaurant.
The decoration is very nice. The crowds were about 1/2 Chinese and 1/2 non-Asian.
The backdoor had the Chinese name of the restaurant on it, "Crouching Dragon Street". But I thought it's crouching "tiger", not dragon in their English name?
Tiger water at Crouching Tiger Restaurant. Nice! The waiters here were very friendly and polite, but they were also a little slow and forgetful.
花生 Peanut
Two free appetizers on the table. My mom loved the peanut. She actually said the peanut was the best dish of the night.
醃蘿蔔 Pickled Radish
Another free appetizer was Pickled Radish. It tasted pretty good, although my dad said he could make a better version at http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com.
紅油龍炒手 Spicy Dumplings (8) ($5.95)
Spicy Dumplings smelt really good when it arrived at our table. It smelt garlicky and spicy. But when we ate it, it wasn't that good. The wonton was hard. The skin was hard, the filling was hard, and it just didn't taste right. The sauce wasn't spicy at all. Actually it didn't even have much flavor. Strange how it smelt so good.
水煮牛肉 Spicy Boiled Beef ($9.95)
Dr. P requested for the Spicy Boiled Beef. It came in a bamboo looking container. It looked really good. But again, it looked better than it tasted. The beef was tender. It was the sauce that wasn't right. We couldn't exactly say how, but it just didn't taste right. We all agreed that LA's Szechuan food is much better at this point. Also there was no vegetable in it. Doesn't the dish usually have cabbage and bean sprout in it?
回鍋肉 Double Cooked Pork ($8.95)
When dad ordered the Double Cooked Pork, the waiter asked if we would like the normal fatty pork, or the leaner version. Since my mom doesn't like fat that much, we ordered it lean and non-spicy for her. It was a mistake because the lean pork just tasted too dry in this dish. But the flavor was great. I like the black bean flavor.
清炒中芥蘭 Stir Fired Chinese Broccoli ($7.50)
Stir Fried Chinese Broccoli was really good. The vegetable tasted fresh and crunchy.
揚州炒飯 Combination Fried Rice ($6.95)
Unfortunately, my brother and his girlfriend got a flat tire on their way to the hotel. They went to couple places trying to fix the tire problem. It was getting late so they just asked us to go eat first and bring them something back to the hotel. We ordered Combination Fried Rice to bring back for them. I had a few bites. It tasted great, especially with some spicy chili sauce added.
When we got the bill, I thought, "that's pretty cheap! We got so much food, and tons of leftover to take back for my brother and his gf." And I also thought, "food wasn't too bad. Service was decent. Even though I still think LA's restaurants have better food, I think I would give them at least 80 points." Then we got back to the hotel, opened up the food they packed us, and found out that they forgot to pack the Spicy Boiled Beef. How can they forgot that dish? We purposely left so much beef for my brother and his gf. If we knew they would forget about it, we would just finish the beef. Now that makes me mad. So just for that, now they only get 60 points! Am I being too strict?

Oh no - sorry to hear about your brother's tire problem. I know you don't live close by anymore, but there's a great tire place in San Gabriel called Tire Central. My whole family and co-workers go there for tires because they always give the lowest prices.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait for your other San Mateo reviews =)
Thanks for the info. He ended up changing all 4 tires in Costco in San Mateo.
Ahh Eileen if I had known you are going to San Mateo, I would have recommended some restaurants to you. I have cousins there and go there often. But overall I find Chinese food in S Cal better. Maybe I am just used to the food around here.
ReplyDeleteThat's exactly how we felt! Chinese and Japanese food there cannot compare to LA's.
But the American style food was pretty good though.
