We drove up to the Bay area for my cousin's wedding this weekend. We met up with my parents at their place. Before heading up north, we went to the nearby Fortune BBQ Restaurant for a quick lunch.
老火湯 Soup
Lunch started with a big bowl of soup. The soup of the day was tomato and celery soup. The soup based tasted like it was made with some pork rib bones + MSG.
燒鴨臘腸雙拼 Roasted Duck and Sausage
They have a buy 4 items get 1 free special. So we ordered 5 different dishes. Roasted Duck and Sausage were from the BBQ counter. Both were good. I really like the sausage here. It was soft and juicy with a really smooth texture.
海鮮豆腐 Seafood with Tofu ($6.25)
Seafood with Tofu was somewhat bland. There were a lot of seafood though... shrimp, scallop, squid, and fish.
梅菜扣肉 Pork with Preserved Vegetable ($5.75)
Pork with Preserved Vegetable looked a lot better than how it tasted. The meat was so overcooked that it was just too tough to chew. I couldn't taste the flavor of the preserved vegetable either. This dish was no good.
蘿蔔炆牛腩 Beef Stew with Turnip ($5.75)
Beef Stew with Turnip was alright. I like the tendon, but the meat was a little tough to chew. Radish wasn't cooked long enough so it had a bitter taste.
時菜雞球 Chicken with Seasonal Greens ($4.95)
Chicken with Seasonal Greens was the free dish we got. The vegetable was good, but the chicken had a very strange taste. My mom said it was because the chicken was soaked in baking soda water for too long. Restaurants often soak meat in baking soda water to make it tender. I thought the taste was pretty gross and didn't eat anymore after one bite.
Overall, we found the food at Fortune BBQ to be disappointing. We used to like this restaurant a lot and came here all the time when we first moved to El Monte like about 5 years ago. Now the food here just doesn't taste the same anymore. My parents said they probably won't come back here again. I don't think I would, either.

We went there a couple of months ago, and was very disappointed. They had a get 3 dishes and get one for free. Or is it 4 dishes? Anyway, we got that, not until I got http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com, I found out that they charged us the free dish too. Was so mad!

Fuck you !!! What nationality are you? Do you know how to eat Chinese food? I am a customer of Fortune BBQ for over 10 years. I lives in Baldwin Park and I will visit there at least once a week. This restaurant is one of my favorite place. A lot of my family members and friends are their customer. The dishes that you posted which I had tried them all. Do you know the fuck are you talking about? I think you should go to hospital (a good one) to check your tongue. I can ensure something is wrong with you. Besides, if they over charge you, why would you speak up at that time? You took each dishes a good photo before you eat them? You looks very familiar with their menu too. There are no way you just passed by for a quick meal. It really doesn't make sense at all!

I am not related to the restaurant but just cannot stand fucking people like you to talk shit about my favorite place. They've been in business at this location for the longest time. People are super friendly over there. Go tell your employer to mind their own business. Doing this kind of stupid thing will not hurt their business and return goes back to you guys. Your employer just copy their menu. I wishes your employer will soon out of business by doing such a dirty thing....

Thank you for taking so much time reading my post and commenting. Just because this is your favorite restaurant, doesn't mean other people have to like the food as much as you do. Just like I LOVE and ADORE Hello Kitty, but I wouldn't force you to use a Hello Kitty wallet like I do. I don't work at a restaurant. I don't get paid for writing my honest opinion. I don't really care if people like the food or not. I am just writing about my own opinion. Sometimes even my family and I have different opinion. I really enjoy reading your blog about these restaurants. I live in El Monte myself, and I have also been to Fortune BBQ, have to say that their food was much better back then...

Fortune BBQ was much much better back in the day.
We used to go there to get take out 2 or 3 times a week about 5 years ago.
But food is pretty bad now. Haven't been back for a long long time.
