[Irvine] [Japanese] Kula Revolving Sushi Bar

Kula Revolving Sushi Bar
2700 Alton Pkway #133
Irvine, CA 92606
(949) 553-0747

We were at Jamboree Diamond Plaza when Kula Revolving Sushi Bar had their soft opening.  On that day, there was a sign saying "VIP ONLY" at the door.  We weren't VIPs, so we didn't get to try it that day.  But we said we would definitely come back to try it.  We finally did last night.

We got there around 7pm.  The place was super busy with tons of people waiting for seats.  We patiently waited for about 20 minutes, and got seated at the sushi bar.

All the items had signs, which let the customers know what exactly the items were.  I like that.  All the plates are $2.  With that price, we really weren't expecting too much.  We thought that we would just have some cheap sushi and get full.  But we were wrong.  The quality of the sushi was actually really really good.

Wasabi

As soon as we saw the freshly grated wasabi, we knew this is a good sushi restaurant.  As I was taking picture of the wasabi, our waitress said, "you're taking picture of our special wasabi?  All of our wasabi and soy sauce are from Japan.  This is the fresh wasabi from the actual vegetable."  And yes, their soy sauce and wasabi are truly better than other Japanese restaurant.

Yellowtail Nigiri ($2.00) x 2

Of course the first thing Dr. P grabbed was Yellowtail.  He just loves yellowtail.  Big pieces of yellowtail that just melt in our mouth.

Albacore Nigiri ($2.00)

Slightly seared Albacore Nigiri was delicious.  We normally eat albacore nigiri with ponzu sauce, but they didn't have any ponzu sauce on the table so we just ate it with soy sauce and wasabi.  Still delicious.

Tuna Nigiri ($2.00)

Tuna Nigiri tasted really fresh.

Toro Nigiri ($2.00)

Dr. P got a piece of Toro Nigiri.  I didn't try it.  But he said it just melted in his mouth.  The toro looked super fresh.

Sea Urchin Gunkan Maki ($2.00) x 3

Sea Urchin Gunkan Maki was kinda hard to get.  By the time the Sea Urchin section came to our seats, it was always empty.  I guess everyone likes Sea Urchin.  We finally got some, and it was sooooo good.  Sea Urchin tasted creamy and sweet.  Love it!

Albacore Roll ($2.00)

Albacore Roll was made with albacore and cucumber inside the roll, and topped with seared albacore and a slice of jalapeno.  Yummy roll!

Scallop Nigiri ($2.00)

Scallop Nigiri came with 2 giant pieces of scallop.  I love fresh raw scallop.  It was soft and sweet.

Miso Soup ($2.00)

Miso Soup came in a really big bowl.  The most special thing about it was that the tofu in the soup was http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com-made.  Usually I won't order miso soup because I just think it's so easy to make at http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com.  But I definitely will order the miso soup at Kula Sushi again.

Spicy Scallop Roll ($2.00)

After having the Scallop Nigiri, I wanted more scallop and got the Spicy Scallop Roll.  The same fresh scallop inside the roll, along with cucumber and spicy mayo sauce.  Yum!

Amaebi Nigiri ($2.00)

Amaebi Nigiri was good.  The shrimp was sweet and creamy.  But I think I prefer the bigger shrimp one.

Tuna Yukke Gunkan Maki ($2.00) x 2

Tuna Yukke Gunkan Maki was a new thing we've never had before.  It was spicy tuna with a raw quail egg.  I popped one in my mouth.  Couldn't really taste the quail egg, but the egg made everything so creamy.  This was too good!  We immediately grabbed another plate.

KULA Roll ($2.00)

KULA Roll was shrimp California roll with salmon that was marinated with lemon juice on top.  The lemon juice actually "cooked" the salmon a little bit.  It was pretty good.

Spicy Tuna Crunchy Roll ($2.00)

I grabbed a plate of Spicy Tuna Crunchy Roll because I saw the giant tempura shrimp in the middle.  But....

Only the outer two pieces had big piece of shrimp in the middle.  The middle piece only had the tempura skin and no shrimp at all!  They hid that piece in the middle!  I got cheated!  I was gonna give Kula a 5 stars, but now they only get 4.5 stars.  The roll was still good though, and that piece of jalapeno was really spicy.

Seared Mackerel Nigiri ($2.00)

We were going to stop at the Crunchy Roll, but then I saw the sushi chef put some Seared Mackerel Nigiri on the revolving belt.  The fish looked to fresh, so we grabbed our last plate of sushi.  Mackerel usually tasted fishy and a little dry, but this one wasn't dry and it wasn't as fishy.  Delicious.

Warabimochi ($2.00)

At first we weren't sure if we wanted to try the dessert, Warabimochi.  Then we saw the two Japanese guys who were sitting next to us eating those, and it looked like they were really enjoying it.  One guy even finished all the "powder".  It must be good.  So we grabbed one, too.  The mochi wasn't was chewy and sticky as the normal mochi we've had.  It was very light.  The powder tasted like peanut.  It actually tasted a lot like the Taiwanese style mochi dessert.  We liked it a lot.

Two people, 18 plates, satisfied, happy, and full!

We were really surprised about the quality of the food here.  How can they afford that with only $2 a plate?  I hope they don't raise the price later.  We will definitely go back to Kula again..... very very soon!

  3. Looks like I have to make a trip to OC ASAP, after reading all your OC dining postings ;-) Good job and keep trying new places to entice your readers =)

It's always fun exploring new area and new places to eat.
OC has some great restaurants, but sometimes I still miss LA food.

  4. Oh my.... Everything is too painful to look at! You are so lucky to have lived everywhere around Southern California! Kula is definitely on my list when we visit S. Cal next time!

After you move to Northern Cali, I'm sure you'll have more chances visiting LA. ^_*

but your picture look much better the real time

Btw its hour +++ waiting time

If you go on weekend, expect longer waiting time.
The sushi tasted really good when we went.
I think if you go at really busy hours, maybe the chefs are all making sushi in a hurry?

  10. A~ I was just there yesterday! After seeing so many people lining outside, we left after grabbing the delicious breads at 85C bakery Cafe. Will definitely try it next time I go over to Irvine!

If you go on weekend, line is always long.
    Maybe try weekday next time?
