[San Gabriel] [Hot Pot] Lu Gi Restaurant

Lu Gi Restaurant
盧記麻辣鍋

539 W Valley Blvd.
San Gabriel, CA 91776
(626) 965-9881

Dr. P and I hadn't had spicy hot pot for a long time, and we were both craving for it.  We woke up super late and visited Lu Gi on a Saturday afternoon around 3pm.  Nothing beats sleeping in and having spicy hot pot on a Saturday!  Even though it was 3pm, the restaurant was still semi-busy.  There were people eating, and people leaving and more people coming the whole afternoon.

鴛鴦鍋底 Spicy Hot Pot Soup Base ($3.50/person)

Half spicy and half non-spicy soup base.  We cooked most of the food in the spicy side.  But when it got too spicy, then we would have some from the non-spicy side.  I always have a bowl of non-spicy soup at the end of the meal.

牛肉 Beef ($4.75)

We always get an order of beef.  They have a more expensive choice, but we thought the regular version was good enough.

羊肉 Lamb ($4.75)

We like the lamb a lot as well.  I didn't take a picture of my favorite intestine because we added to the hot pot as soon as the the waiter brought the plate.

手打蝦球 Shrimp Balls ($4.95)

Dr. P's favorite item was the shrimp balls.  The handmade shrimp balls tasted really fresh.  It is best cooked on the non-spicy side so we could taste the freshness of the shrimp.

蠔菇 Oyster Mushroom ($3.00)

Oyster mushroom was delicious on either spicy or non-spicy side.  The mushroom absorbed all the delicious soup.

蒟蒻 Konjac ($3.00)

I ordered the Konjac by accident.  I meant to order tong how vegetable but somehow read 蒟蒻 as 茼蒿.  Do I need new glasses?  But the Konjac turned out to be really good.  It didn't turn soggy at all like glass noodle does.  It tasted like crunchy glass noodle.  I love this on the spicy side.  Definitely will order this again next time.

茼蒿 Tong Hao ($2.50)

Gotta have Tong Hao with hot pot.  We cooked vegetable on the non-spicy side because it would soaked up too much spicy oil on the spicy side.

白麵 Noodle ($2.00)

We always end the meal with some noodle.

This was my dipping sauce.  I only use garlic, green onion, cilantro, vinegar and sesame oil.  Dr. P like his with sha cha sauce.

I used one bowl when I eat hot pot.  Dr. P had to use 4!  One for the sauce, one for the food, one for the soup, one for who knows what.

I LOVE Taiwanese spicy hot pot!  It's summer and it's hot, but I don't care.  I want more spicy hot pot!

Lu Gi now has a 2nd location in San Gabriel.  Maybe next time we'll try the new place.

  2. I never knew you could order konjac at a hot pot restaurant! Need to remember to order that next time we visit a hot pot restaurant. What is that metal contraption at the bottom right of the photo with Dr. P in it?

    It's a strainer spoon.

  5. Hi Eileen! Big fan of your blog! Do you think this place is better than 小胖羊?My friends and I are trying to find a good hot pot restaurant and we don't know the east LA area that well. Any recommendations? Thanks!

haha you're so cute! You called it 小「胖」羊, but it's supposed to be 小「肥」羊.
But that's ok since 胖 and 肥 means the same thing. ^^
Personally I don't like 小肥羊 hot pot that much. I don't like all that herbal garlicky taste of the soup base.
I like the Taiwanese style spicy hot pot much much better.
So yes, I think Lu Gi is better than 小肥羊. But everyone has different taste.
I still think you should give it a try to find out for yourself.
