[Los Angeles] [Japanese] Sushi Gen

I tried to take my parents to Sushi Gen many times before.  But dad always said, "Little Tokyo is too far.  Let's just go somewhere closer."  Last week, they finally agreed to drive out to downtown to try it and ended up liking it a lot.  Today mom went out for lunch with her friend.  So dad asked me if I wanted to go to Sushi Gen for lunch.  He said he has been craving sashimi since our last visit.  See how Sushi Gen can be addicting?

Sashimi Lunch ($15.00)

We left our house around 1:10pm.  Got there around 1:30pm.  Still tons of people waiting outside.  We got seated at 1:55pm, 5 minutes before their lunch closing time.  Sashimi was fresh and delicious as usual.  I finished EVERYTHING on the plate.... ok except the wasabi and a piece of lettuce.

Miso Soup, Sonomono & Tofu

Food was great, but dad wasn't too happy about the service today.  The waitress brought the sashimi plate and our check at the same time.  After taking 2 bites of our food, she came and asked us if we could pay first.  After she brought back the receipt for us to sign, since we were eating, we just left it on the table.  She came back again and asked us to sign the receipt.  And busboy and waitress kept on checking our table to see if we finish any dish.  We felt really rushed.  It was like they really wanted us to finish our food as soon as we could and just get out of there so they could take their afternoon break.  So we did ate really fast and finished everything in under 30 minutes.

I still prefer to go to Sushi Gen early when they open the door at 11:15am.  We weren't being rushed like this when we went earlier.  We usually finish eating around 12:30pm.  And I really don't like eating too fast.  So next time I'll still try to go early instead of late.

  2. So funny! this was my exact experience - i had the sashimi lunch as pictured above (identical really & truly delicious) and the service was sub par in that it felt like constant pressure from the moment we sat down - w/in minutes she wanted our order (had not even read the menu) and then quickly after meal was served so was the check w/out any inquiries on what else we might be interested in. I admit the food is so good I will definitely go back but too bad about the service.

With that many people waiting, I guess they just want to get you out as soon as they can so they can make more money.
I don't really like the service, but the food is so good so I guess I'll still go back.
