[Irvine] [Chinese] Chef Chen

Chef Chen

We had been wanting to try Chef Chen ever since we moved down to Orange County. It's been two years, and we finally tried the restaurant.

花生 Peanuts

Free peanuts was served before the food arrived.

紅油炒手 Spicy Wontons ($4.99)

Besides regular Chinese dishes, Chef Chen also offers Northern Chinese style noodles and pastries. We were both feeling like having noodle that night. We got some Spicy Wontons as appetizer. The wontons was drizzled with some slightly sweet thick soy sauce on the top, and the vinegary spicy sauce on the bottom of the plate was quite spicy. When mixing the sauces together, it tasted really good. We also like how there was a lot of blenched spinach under the wontons. The spinach was delicious with the spicy sauce.

牛肉麵 Beef Noodle Soup ($5.99)

We asked for medium spicy for the Beef Noodle Soup. It was SPICY, and we loved it! The beef was tender, but I liked the soft beef tendon even more. Soup was very flavorful. It was exactly what I wanted, a bowl of good soupy hot noodle. (It was the day after crazy drinking at friends' wedding. Perfect for hangover! haha...)

什錦刀削麵 Combination Dough Cut Noodle ($6.99)

We love dough cut noodle. There were options of chicken, beef, pork, shrimp, or vegetarian when ordering the dough cut noodle. We just asked for combination, which has a bit of everything. Simply delicious! The flavor was different than the ones we had at Islamic Chinese restaurants. Chef Chen's version tasted more Taiwanese to me. Maybe it was the addition of shitake mushroom? We really enjoyed this plate of noodle.

Everything we had at Chef Chen that night was good. Portion was large, and the price was very reasonable. I want to go back to try their dishes with rice. But then... I think I want the dough cut noodle again.
