I had a late night mystery shopping job at Original Pantry Cafe on Saturday.  Dr. P and I went to a birthday party first and got to Pantry around 12:45am.  We parked across the street, paid $2, and hurriedly crossed the street for some late night dinner.

This place was full.  We had to wait in line with fellow half drunk patrons for about 10 minutes before a table became available.  The greasy air inside the restaurant made us really hungry.

Menu is on the wall.  This is a cash only place.

Bread @ Original Pantry Cafe by you.
Sourdough Bread

Service was a bit slow because they were so busy.  But good we had the delicious sourdough bread to pass the waiting time.

The waitress also brought us to plates of Cole Slaw.  The slaw was a bit watery, but it was so good.  I ate my bread with it and it was yummy.

Coffee @ Original Pantry Cafe by you.
Coffee ($1.75)

Gotta have some coffee to sober up a little.  I had a few drinks at the birthday party.  Oh just 1 big glass of cognac and 4 beers.  No, I wasn't drunk (well, when I start saying "I'm not drunk", it usually means I'm drunk haha).

Ham Steak & Eggs @ Original Pantry Cafe by you.
Ham Steak & Eggs ($15.80)

Dr. P ordered Ham Steak & Eggs.  It was one giant piece of ham, fat and juicy ham.  Two of us only managed to finish 1/3 of it.  The egg was cooked perfectly too.

French Toast @ Original Pantry Cafe by you.
French Toast

Ham & Steak came with toast, but Dr. P requested to substitute with French toast.  The French toast was made with the same sourdough bread we had earlier.  It was quite good.  And there was no additional charge for the substitution!

Potatoes @ Original Pantry Cafe by you.
Potatoes

It also came with a side of potatoes.  Can one person really finish all the food?  I doubt it.  The potatoes didn't have much taste though.  I had to add a lot of hot sauce and ketchup to it.

New York Steak @ Original Pantry Cafe by you.
New York Steak ($17.45)

I got a New York Steak.  I ordered it medium, but it was cooked to medium well.  It was a big piece of steak.  But there was really nothing too special about it.  It came with corn and potatoes.

My steak was just alright, but Dr. P's Ham & Eggs was great.  It wasn't exactly cheap, but portion was enormous.  We got two big boxes of leftover to take http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com.  Service was professional, but not too friendly.  I would recommend to come here for breakfast, or late night eat but order the breakfast items.

I think the best steak would be Beef Tenderloin, we always order that with "butterfly cut", so juicy, tender...hmmmm....yummy!! We never had breakfast there before, how was the Ham steak? salty? French Tost definately looks good!!

So I ordered the wrong steak! Next time I'll try Beef Tenderloin!
Ham steak was really really good. I love the fatty skin part haha.

  3. Hey Eileen,

You have to sit the counter and get the old guy. He is the best! Sitting the table is almost like kiss of death. The food there is ok lah, but the coffee and the eggs are two of things I'll forgive them for everything else. The cole slaw is legendary there. LOL

Raymond Chandler, the famous writer loves coming here and sit in the counter back in the old golden days. You'll probably to hit that up next time.

Ok I'll try the counter next time! ^^

  4. I like reading your food adventures. I spent last summer in Japan--they sell a LOT of stuff to make the cute bento (Hello Kitty for example). I wish I lived nearby to eat at some of those places!

I'm a big fan of your blog! I read all about your summer in Japan on your blog!
Also love reading the Joy of Cooking adventures! ^^
