Dr. P and I was craving for some Chinese food.  Hop Woo was probably the only authentic Chinese restaurant that we known of in the Westside.  And they have lunch special!

Lunch special dishes are $5.95 or $6.95.

They also have 1/2 roasted duck for $7.95, and whole live lobster for $11.95.  We didn't try either.  But almost every table ordered the roasted duck.

Sour and Spicy Soup @ Hop Woo Seafood Restaurant by you.
酸辣湯 Sour and Spicy Soup

Our lunch started with free sour and spicy soup.  It was a bit too salty for my taste.  Also they added pickled mustard green in the soup, which I thought was really strange.

We each picked a dish.  I picked Shredded Pork in Spicy Garlic Sauce.  I always like this dish.  A little spicy, a little sweet, and very good with rice.  Funny thing is, I never order pork in non-Asian restaurant.  But just LOVE pork at Chinese/Japanese/Korean restaurants.

蝦龍糊 Shrimp in Lobster Sauce ($6.95)

Dr. P picked Shrimp in Lobster Sauce.  The lobster sauce was different than before.  Last time the lobster sauce had Chinese black beans in it, the sauce was a darker color, and a bit more tasty.  This time the sauce was on the sweeter side, kind of like the Chinese style cream corn soup.  It was still pretty good when mixed with rice.  But I think I like the previous version better.

We also got a Beef Fried Rice with Lettuce for to go.  The portion was big enough for two of us for dinner.  I like the texture of the fried rice, but thought that could use a little more salt.  I added some garlic chili sauce when I had this at work.  Nothing a good garlic chili sauce can't fix.

Lots of leftover to take http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com.  Chinese food at Westside is still a few dollars more expensive than SGV's.  But we're just happy to have a restaurant like Hop Woo that serves lunch special at that side of town.

  1. Yeah Hop Woo is pretty much the most authentic Chinese restaurant in West LA. I've been there a few times. But it's really not comparable to SGV. Now I wish I can move to SGV to enjoy all the good Chinese food.

If you have time on the weekend, I think it's worth the drive to go to SGV for some cheap, authentic, and much cheaper Chinese food.

  2. Eileen....is it in the plaza with subway?
i was going to try this one the other day, but my coworkers stopped me and told me they got a B rating.
And one of my coworker even said they had roaches.....

A B rating never stopped us from going to a restaurant.
We've even been to C restaurants. haha....

  3. True story. I used to come here a lot and pick up their roast duck and chicken http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com. Do you how much it cost seven years ago for a half of a chicken? $13!

When I went to Kim Tar near my http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com in the city of Artesia, a whole chicken only cost $9.

Yeah, the sticker shock still stay with me as of today. Never will go back really to that particular Hop Woo. I used to like the other one in Chinatown.

    $13 for 1/2 chicken? 7 years ago? That's such a rip-off!
Too bad there aren't much choices to have Chinese food in westside.

  4. Have you tried Little Hong Kong Cafe in the same plaza as Restaurant 2117?

That was my favorite Chinese food place in West LA. You're absolute right, Chinese food in WLA is a bad joke sometimes, but Little Hong Kong was decent enough. Too bad, their prices are a bit higher than I am accustomed to for a Chinese Restaurant.

No, I haven't tried Little Hong Kong Cafe, but Dr. P has.
He likes their fried rice. I'll give it a try next time! Thanks for the recommendation.

  5. Cool, I'm probably moving to LA in April so I'll have to check those restaurants out.

Hope you'll like Chinese food in LA.
