[San Gabriel] [Chinese] Newport Seafood

October 24 was my mom's birthday.  She requested the lobster from Newport Seafood for her birthday dinner with our family.

We went to their old location, which was in the same plaza as Golden Deli.  There was a big "We've moved" sign on the door.  They moved a few blocks down the street.  Now the restaurant is in a much bigger space with its own parking lot.

The restaurant used to have a... well, crappy and ghetto interior.  But at this new location, it became fancy.  We thought they probably raised the price as well, but actually most of the dishes still have the old price.  The new place is much much bigger, but there were still lots of people waiting outside.

Beef Loc Lac (French Style) ($11.95)

The five of us ordered a family dinner set with 4 dishes plus 2 more of their speciality dishes.  We LOVE the Beef Loc Lac.  The cubed steak was super tender.  It was sauteed with a black pepper sauce, served over a bed of raw sliced onion and lettuce.  Simply delicious.

Newport Special Lobster ($15.95/lb) ($59.81)

My mom's favorite lobster!  Since my mom doesn't eat spicy food, we ordered everything non-spicy.  Newpot Special Lobster was $15.95 per pound that night and we ordered a small 3.75 pounds one.  It was sauteed with ginger, garlic, green onion and their special spices.  Lots of meat and it had some eggs, too.  My mom was very happy with it.

House Seafood Soup ($10.95)

The rest of the dishes were from the family dinner set.  We got the $28 one with one soup and three dishes.  For the soup, the choices were Cat Fish Hot and Sour Soup or the House Seafood Soup.  Since mom doesn't eat spicy, we got the seafood soup.

The soup had tons of seafood.  Big shrimp, squid, fish balls, pork and vegetable.  Pretty good soup.  I had two bowls.

Kong Pao Chicken ($9.95)

Kong Pao came with either chicken or beef.  Since we already got a beef dish, we opted for chicken.  It was the first time I had non-spicy Kong Pao.  It was actually quite good.  It had a hint of sweetness to it.

Sauteed Peasprout ($9.25)

For the vegetable dish, the choices were Sauteed Peasprout or Chinese Broccoli.  The Satueed Peasprout was fresh and very good.

Clam with Spicy Hot Sauce ($10.95)

The clam with basil leaves were very flavorful.  Well, I think it would taste even better a little spicy.

Orange

After our satisfying meal, we were treated with some fresh sweet oranges.

I really like Newport Seafood.  Everything was delicious.  The set was definately a deal.  If the dishes were ordered seperately, it would cost $42.  But the set was only $28.  The Beef Loc Lac and lobster were the must get items.  We will most definately be back again.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MOM!

  1. Hi Eileen,

Great review! :) Thanks for the reminder about Newport Seafood moving to the new location (I haven't been back in the area in a while). I'll have to go visit the new location soon. (The Clams and Lobster look delicious as usual (^_~).)

(BTW, I found a new dessert place you might like. :)

  3. Is this a Vietnamese influenced restaurant? I love beef loc lac as well, but we don't see much of it in the restaurant in GA. Thanks for the review, I will definitely pay a visit to them if I get a chance to go to San Gabriel.

  4. Mmmm..... Looks yummy!
    Yes, it's a Vietnamese-Chinese restaurant.
How many people did you go with? To really enjoy the place you need to go with enough headcount. They used to have a $168 special (I'm sure it costs more now, that was maybe 10 years ago??) that included the lobster, crab, and all the goodies. It was a feast even for 10 people with plenty of leftovers. Now it's hard for us to get the quorum to go there!
