[Los Angeles] [Japanese] Ugly Roll Sushi

One night I was browsing on Yelp.com.  The name "Ugly" Roll Sushi grabbed my attention.  Are their rolls and sushi ugly?  But the restaurant has such good review.  So Dr. P and I went for lunch to try it out.

The restaurant is located in a strip mall in West LA next to a Burger King.

The restaurant is small, with only 5 or 6 tables.  Most people came in to get takeout.  If you want to eat in the restaurant, order at the counter and pay first.  Then the waitress will bring the food to your table.  There was one waitress, one Japanese sushi chef, and a Hispanic guy in the back frying the tempura.

Most of the restaurants in the westside are on the pricy side.  But Ugly Roll Sushi's rolls are dirt cheap.  Most rolls are only $2.95 for 6 pieces.

There was another "special" menu.  The food looked pretty, but the writing did looked quite ugly.

Miso Soup ($0.99)

Dr. P got a miso soup.  It had lots of tofu and seaweed in it.  We liked it.  And we liked the price, too.

Salmon Skin Salad @ Ugly Roll Sushi by you.
Salmon Skin Salad ($3.95)

Crispy salmon skin on a bed of lettuce with ponzu sauce.  I really like this salad because (1) it has avocado; (2) the salmon skin had lots of meat on it; (3) the ponzu sauce is delicious; (4) it's only $3.95!

Since this roll has the same name as the restaurant, it must be their signature dish.  It was our favorite dish of the day!  The Ugly Roll was made with California Roll topped with salmon, albacore and fish roe, sprinkled with chopped green onion, sesame seed, dabbed with a dollop of hot sauce, and finally, drizzled with chilled ponzu sauce.  Yum yum yum yum!  This roll was soooooooo good.  I think I can eat 2 plates all by myself.

Ugly Combo @ Ugly Roll Sushi by you.
Ugly Combo ($7.95)

The Ugly Combo is $6.95.  You can pick any two rolls plus shrimp tempura.  I picked Spicy Salmon Roll and Tempura Roll.  Since Tempura Roll is a specialty roll, it cost $1 extra.  The spicy tuna roll was pretty spicy and pretty good.  The Tempura Roll was good at first, but it became a bit too heavy later with the cream cheese and fried batter.  The tempura was good, but I didn't like the dipping sauce.  The flavor just wasn't right.  For 12 pieces of sushi, 2 big shrimp tempura, bunch of veggie tempura and a bowl of fruit, this Ugly Combo is definately a great deal!

We also got a sushi combo plate.  Didn't care much about the cooked shrimp, the tuna was alright, and the salmon was really good.  But their rolls are better than the sushi.

We really like Ugly Roll Sushi.  Did I mention how much I love their Ugly Roll?  We will be back again for some more cheap and delicious rolls very very soon.

  5. This place is at my back door whereas just 5 min walking distance to get there eh...

When they first open, I tried it with my mom back in April. It wasn't so good like Eileen you wrote, maybe because they were just grand opening at the time.

    I'll give it a try then =)
