On Wednesday, I finish my class around 6:20pm.  I am usually tired and hungry by the time I get http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com around 7pm.  So we decided to make Wednesday our going out to eat date night.  Since it is OC Restaurant Week, I went online to find a participating restaurant.  I started by looking at the cheapest option, $20 for dinner.  I saw K'ya Bistro & Bar's menu, and immediately made a reservation.

K'ya Bistro & Bar is located inside La Casa del Camino Hotel.  It's on Coast Highway right by the beach.  We found free street parking without any problem.

I was glad that we had reservation.  There were so many people waiting for seats.  But since we had reservation, we were seated right away.  They had a piano player in the hotel lobby playing piano.  At least those people can enjoy some beautiful music while waiting.

For $20 dinner, we get a starter, an entree, a desert, and a glass of wine.  This is a tapas, or small dish, restaurant.  We took a look at their regular menu, and found that most of the starters are about $5, and main entrees are about $10~$15.  For the restaurant week special, the food would cost about $20 normally as well, but with the deal you get a free glass of wine.

Saddle Rock Cabernet / Saddle Rock Chardonnay

We started with a glass of Cabernet, and a glass of Chardonnay.  I like the chardonnay a lot.

Hawaiian Ahi Poke ($5.00)
Onion, seaweed, avocado, spicy soy

Most of the people in the restaurant ordered Hawaiian Ahi Poke for starter.  The ahi tuna tasted fresh.  I like the flavor of the spicy soy dressing.  Lots of seaweed and sesame, too.  The crispy chips were yummy.  There were a little bit of arugula salad on the bottom of the plate.  We like this starter a lot.

Spinach, Bacon and Blue Cheese Salad ($5.00)
Tomato, red onion, honey-mustard dressing

Another starter was Spinach, Bacon and Blue Cheese Salad.  It was a pretty good salad.  I like the sweet honey mustard dressing.

Grilled Filet Mignon ($10.00)
Spinach, polenta and blue cheese

Dr. P ordered Grilled Filet Mignon for his entree.  We had to wait for a bit for our entree to arrive.  While my entree was piping hot, Dr. P's food was cold.  We thought maybe they had to re-make my entree, or for some reason make my entree a little later than the steak, and just let the steak sat.  Dr. P sent the plate back, and they heated up the steak a bit more, and re-made the spinach and polenta on the plate.  The steak was cooked perfectly medium.  They seasoned the steak lightly because it was meant to be eaten with the salty blue cheese.  We love the combination of blue cheese with steak.  This was a very good entree.  Even though it was "tapa" size, we thought the portion was the same as any petite filet mignon at a steakhouse.

Striped Cheese Ravioli & Lobster ($10.00)
Wild mushrooms, lobster cream sauce

I ordered Striped Cheese Ravioli & Lobster.  Even though they used a small plate, the plate was filled tall with tons of food.  I really think it was the same portion as any normal restaurant.  The cheese ravioli was pretty good.  It had green stripe on the ravioli, which looked the same as the ravioli from The Melting Pot.  Maybe it came from the same supplier?  The pesto cream sauce was soooooo delicious.  I wished we had bread for dipping.  There were a lot of lobster in the pasta, like a lot a lot... really big pieces, too.  The whole time we were eating, we talked about how could they make any profit if they give us that much lobster for only $10.  I love this seafood pasta dish.

Creme Brulée

Creme Brulee was made with vanilla bean, and I could really tasted it.  It was a great dessert.

Bread Pudding with Ice Cream

Dr. P loved the bread pudding.  They ran out of ice cream, so they had berries with whipped cream with the bread pudding.  It was banana and pecan bread with big pieces of banana.  Love it!  It wasn't too sweet.  Just very yummy.

All that food for $20/person?  Such a good bargain!  We love this restaurant, and plan to come back soon.  They have happy hour on weekday with everything 1/2 off.  Which means $5 filet mignon and $2.50 ahi poke!  That's crazy cheap!  We'll be back very very soon!!  OC Restaurant Week ends on 3/6.  You still have 2 more days to enjoy the special deal.

By the way, I really like this boutique hotel.  It's so pretty and cozy.  Beautiful lobby!

  1. As I was browsing your photos, I couldn't help wondering the same thing about how they managed to make a profit? The food look really delicious and the portions look good. Seems like a great place to check out even without restaurant week specials. Thanks for the post.

The price is very reasonable even without any discount.
I really think the portion is the same as any normal restaurant.
It's just that normal restaurant put the food in bigger plates.
We like this place a lot. Will definitely return again soon.
