I've known the name Ruth's Chris for years. I've been wanting to try their steak for years. I finally did last Saturday. Thanks to their special $39.95/person 3 course classic menu, we had delicious steak without breaking the bank.
We arrived at our reservation time 7pm. The restaurant was almost full. The hostess brought us to the back room. We passed a fish tank with live lobster in it. I thought only Asian restaurants do that. We liked the back room. It was a lot quieter and spacious than the front booths. I would hate to be seated at the booth by the entrance with tons of people waiting by your table while you are trying to have a romantic dinner with your date.
On their website, they only posted the $39.95 menu. But there is also a $49.95 option. For the more expensive option, you can pick between a large filet, ribeye, lamb chop or lobster tail. As we were ordering, the waitress informed us that every dish at Ruth's Chris has butter and parsley on it. They are happy to make any requested change, but food with tons of butter and parsley is the recommended Ruth's Chris way. Yes, me like butter, more the merrier.
Bread
Hot bread and whipped butter were brought to the table after we ordered. This gotta be the hottest bread to serve in a restaurant. The waitress told us that everything came out of their kitchen is extremely hot. She also warned us not to touch any plate because it will be 500 degree hot.
Riesling, Kabinett, Selbach-Oster, Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, Germany, 2007 ($13.00) / Cabernet Sauvignon, Hall, Napa Valley, CA 2005 ($18.00)
Dr. P ordered a glass of Riesling for me and a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon for himself. I love the sweet Riesling. It was a little sour at the tip of the tongue. Then it became sweet toward the back of the tongue. Hey don't I sound like a wine person now? haha.... Dr. P also liked his red wine a lot. It was very smooth with a complex flavor.
Louisiana Seafood Gumbo ($8.50)
For the first course, I ordered Louisiana Seafood Gumbo. The soup was a little on the salty side. The white rice definitely helped though. There were tons of tiny shredded crab meat floating around in the soup. There were also a few small shrimps and some sausage. It was also slightly spicy. I thought it was too salty at first. But as my palate got used to the flavor, the soup turned tastier.
Caesar Salad ($8.00)
Fresh crisp romaine hearts tossed with Romano cheese and a creamy Caesar dressing and topped with parmesan and black pepper crisps.
Dr. P got the Caesar salad. Delicious. Simply delicious Caesar salad.
Petite Filet and Shrimp
4-ounce medallions of our filet topped with jumbo shrimp.
For our main course, Dr. P had one of the $39.95 choices, Pitite Filet and Shrimp. The shrimp was definitely jumbo. It was almost as big as the filet mignon. It was very tasty, too.
The filet was cooked to a perfect medium. The steak was lean and very tender. The meat tasted very beefy meaty, in a really good way. I normally eat my steak with ketchup and A-1 Sauce. But at Ruth's Chris, non of that was needed. We really enjoyed the true flavor of the beef.
Ribeye ($39.00)
An outstanding example of USDA Prime at its best. Well marbled for peak flavor, deliciously juicy.
My main course was the $49.95 choice of ribeye. This was one giant piece of steak. It came out still sizzling on the plate.
Also perfectly medium, my ribeye was fattier than the filet. The meat was even softer because of the fat. The flavor was also completely different than the filet mignon. It didn't taste as "meaty and beefy", but it was more flavorful. Indeed a piece of super juicy steak. Of course, we weren't able to finish it. Half of it was bagged to-go.
Sauteed Mushrooms ($8.00)
Two sides were also included in the meal. Sauteed Mushrooms were so juicy and full. Love the meaty taste of mushroom.
Mashed Potatoes ($8.00)
The most delicious Mashed Potatoes. Super super tasty. I would LOVE to have the recipe of their mashed potatoes.
Coffee ($2.95)
A cup of coffee to go with dessert.
Dessert Symphony
Consisting of Fresh Berries & Sweet Cream and Chocolate Mousse
The dessert symphony was a combo of two mini dessert. Fresh Berries & Sweet Cream was a "soupy" dessert. Somehow I thought the sweet cream would be more like a thick cream, but it wasn't. It was pretty good though. The tartness of the berries and the sweet cream balanced each other well.
The chocolate mousse came in a chocolate cup! I didn't even know at first. When the chocolate came apart, I actually thought I broke their container and got scared for a minute! Stupid me. Then Dr. P called me "pabo" (I think that means silly in Korean) and told me it was just chocolate. So I ate it. Every piece of it. It was yum yum yummy.
I can't believe I didn't try Ruth's Chris sooner. If I knew their steak is THIS good, I would've came like 10 years ago!
Can't wait to go back again. I think I'm going to take my parents to try it, too.
Dr. P, when are you taking to Ruth's Chris again? haha....
[ad#ad-unit]
I have always had quality meals at Ruth's Chris, no matter which location. It is always consistent and reliable.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe I waited this long to try Ruth's Chris.
Can't wait to go back again!
I also need to try Ruth Chris...but after Urasawa this month, I will need to save a lot of money. Lots of QQ 的豬排飯 for me!
ReplyDelete排骨飯啦!哈哈我們沒有在叫豬排飯的說
You went to Urasawa? You gotta post it on your new blog!
I've been to the same Ruth Chris several years ago. I remembered their steak was pretty good. But I'm actually not a steak person and I prefer prime rib better. Lawry's prime rib...yum~
ReplyDeleteWow $39.95 for 3 course? How did you get this deal? Is it still with the DineLA event?
No, it's not DineLA event. The $39.95 classic menu is printed on their regular menu.
I dont care what anyone says, for the record, ruths chris is SOLID (for their bread and filet mignon atleast) lol. seriously their filet mignon is so solid, i love it! that hot HOT bread is just sooooooooooo good. especially with butter. yes, more butter the better!!
ReplyDeleteooooohhh yeahh~~~~ the hot bread with butter, lots of it!
The filet mignon was definitely great! I want one NOW!
Food in Ruth's Chris is terrific. I have been there couple times.
ReplyDeleteThere's a Ruth's Chris in Taiwan, too!
Hey hwgirl79,
ReplyDeleteBased on the receipt, it doesn't look like it's DineLA.
Hi Eileen,
It's a good thing you try out this place first instead of Cut. You'll never go back to anything else again after trying out Cut. I will now have to force myself into going to Ruth Chris. Hahahaha. Nice! The Ribeye looks yummy!
haha..... Gotta work my way up to CUT.
I thought Black Angus had great steak!
After Ruth's Chris, I don't think I can go back to Black Angus. haha...
39 per person for 3 course meal is a good deal consider this place. it's not in DineLA but i think more deals like this are more welcome!
ReplyDeletethanks Eileen for sharing such good info again and all the dishes do look very good, but the glass of wine did cost a little bit too much, $18 for a glass!!!
also, on their web, it says 6 OZ steak but under your picture, only stated 4 oz? maybe a typo?
I now got more places to try, thank you Eileen!
K.J
Because of the economy, more and more restaurants have to lower their price.
Otherwise people simply won't go. Oopsy, I think the filet mignon was 6 oz. My bad!
if i am not mistaken, I think I went to their branch location in San Diego before.
ReplyDeleteThey have a bar inside, right??
I only remembered I order buffalo steak with blue cheese on top...I forgot which part of the meat is that...but it was really good...not as tender as regular steak..however, it's got more bite and texture to it...you get to enjoy the flavor of the delicious buffalo steak by chewing just a bit longer in your mouth, but it's definitely one of the best steak I've ever tasted...
I don't know about the San Diego Branch. I just LOVE their steaks.
it's been years (and thousands of miles away) since I lasted visited Ruth's... nice write up, as always, but still see no reason to go back...
ReplyDeleteYou don't like Ruth's Chris?
Well, I've never been to those high-end steakhouses.
I'm still trying to work my way up there.
