I probably had been passing by Shrimp House for the past 20 years, but somehow never went in the restaurant. It was called Shrimp Ahoy back in the days. Then there was the 80% off deal for Restaurant.com, and I saw Shrimp House on the list. $25 gift certificate for $2? It was a great deal and perfect opportunity to try a new restaurant.
Parents and I wanted to have an early dinner on Friday. We got to the restaurant around 5:30pm. The restaurant was full! With a lot of people waiting outside!! I had no idea their business was that good. After a 10 minutes wait, we got a booth seat. The decoration of the restaurant is very "seafood-like". There's blue sky ceiling with seagulls and lots of sea-related fixtures and signs along the wall.
Hefenwisen Draft Beer
Dad saw some other people drinking the Hefenwisen beer and requested one too. It came iced cold with a slice of lemon in it. Dad said it was perfect.
Manhattan Clam Chowder ($1.99)
Almost everyone in the restaurant was drinking clam chowder. To add a cup of clam chowder to any entree is $1.99. There are two different clam chowder, red (Manhattan) or white (Boston). Mom got the tomato-based Manhattan Clam Chowder. She likes it. The only complaint was there were no bread offered to go with the soup.
Boston Clam Chowder ($1.99)
Dad and I got the Boston Clam Chowder (my entree actually comes with the clam chowder). It was creamy and rich, with lots of potato and clam. The flavor was light though. I don't think they used much salt, and I like it.
Green Salad
Every entree comes with two side choices. One of the choices is green salad. Dad ordered a green salad with his dinner. It was a big plate of fresh lettuce, carrot, and a slice of tomato. The portion was quite big. Dad said he was already almost full after the soup and salad.
Shrimp Salad
Succulent bay shrimp, fresh garden salad, tomato and your choice of dressing.
My entree not only comes with the clam chowder, but also comes with shrimp salad. On top of the salad, there was a mountain of small bay shrimp. Seriously, there was A LOT of shrimp. Almost too much shrimp for 3 of us. If you like shrimp, this would definitely be a great salad to get.
Wild Caught Pacific Salmon Fillet ($13.25)
Mom ordered the Wild Caught Pacific Salmon Fillet with steamed veggies and rice pilaf. Even though the salmon is listed under the "grilled fish" section, the fish was pan-fried rather than grilled. Mom likes the pan-fried fish much much better. The flavor was light, which was another thing my mom likes. Not oily, one more point. My mom thought this was one of the best salmon she had in a restaurant.
Sirloin Steak with Shrimp Scampi ($13.50)
Dad got the surf & turf combo of Sirloin Steak with Shrimp Scampi. He ordered the steak medium, but it came out medium well. It was a big piece of steak. Dad didn't like the steak much though. But mom and I thought it was alright. Shrimp Scampi was great. Buttery and garlicky, yum!
Captain Paul's Deluxe ($12.75)
Cup of clam chowder, shrimp salad, one jumbo shrimp, one fish fillet, three scallops or three oysters. All breaded daily and golden fried.
I got the Captain Paul's Deluxe. Jumbo shrimp, fish fillet, and 3 scallops (or you can pick 3 oysters). The crust was made with cornmeal. Very light, and not oily at all. Mom normally doesn't like any fried food. I cut her a piece fish and asked her to try it. She ate it, and asked for more. haha.... Dad also thought the fried seafood was much much better than his over-cooked steak.
This was their famous jumbo shrimp. It was almost as big as the fish fillet. Their scallop was also really big. I think this Captain Paul's combo was the best deal. Clam chowder, shrimp salad, jumbo shrimp, fish fillet, 3 scallops, and a side of Cole slaw, for under$13!
With the gift certificate, our bill was only $26.40! But as the GC rule, 18% gratuity of the original price is mandatory. Our final bill was $35.66. Plus the $2 I spent for the GC, $37.66. We took a big box of food http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com, too. What a deal!
Mom couldn't stop talking about how much she likes this restaurant, so I bought 2 more GC for her. Dad only thought it was ok. I thought the food was quite good, but nothing too special though. But the price was definitely on the cheap side. Every entree is under $15 (except king crab legs and lobster of course). The 80% discount for restaurant.com already expired. But now they have a 60% off promo (Code word: GREEN). You can get a $25 GC for $4. Still a pretty good deal. If you want some cheap and yummy seafood, get a GC, and try Shrimp House.

Thanks for this review! I always drive by Shrimp House/Shrimp Ahoy, too, but have never felt inclined to actually step inside.
ReplyDeleteI know. Somehow this restaurant doesn't look too appealing from the outside.
I past it many times too, always saw the parking lot full. My husband wanted to try it, so I got the g/c for them, it is a good time to try it.
