It was my mom's birthday, and she felt like having dim sum. We decided to try the newly opened Capital Seafood in Arcadia. We haven't been there before, but my brother has and liked it. We were there on a weekday around lunch time. The restaurant was almost full. They also offers lunch special with the typical Chinese dishes, but almost everyone was having dim sum. The restaurant has nice decoration and looks fancier than your regular Chinese restaurant. There is no dim sum cart. Everything has to be ordered from the menu. The price is slightly higher comparing to most dim sum restaurants in San Gabriel Valley.

蝦子燒賣皇 Pork Siu Mai (4) ($3.38)

Pork Siu Mai had a mixture of shrimp and pork as filling. It tasted very ordinary.

杞子鮮竹卷 Steamed Bean Curd Roll w/ Gogi (2) ($2.38)

There were bamboo shoots, carrots, black ear mushroom inside the steam bean curd roll. The whole thing was steamed with a few (3 or 4?) gogi berries on top. It was good, but again, nothing too special about it.

臘味蘿蔔糕 Pan Fried Turnip Cake ($2.38)

I felt like I'm just repeating myself here.... this tasted just like standard turnip cake.

水晶蝦餃皇 Shrimp Har Gow (4) ($3.38)

Shrimp Har Gow had quite a few shrimp inside with some peas.

鮮蝦春卷 Deep Fried Shrimp Egg Roll ($3.38)

I think they put shrimp in every item. The only egg roll they offered is shrimp egg roll. It tasted like oily egg roll with shrimp inside.

燕麥蓮蓉包 Steamed Sweet Buns ($2.38)

The skin of the steamed sweet buns was made with flour and oatmeal. The inside was yellow sweet bean paste. It was just slightly sweet. This one was actually pretty good.

星洲炒米粉 Singapore Rice Vermicelli ($9.95)

Singapore Rice Vermicelli is my mom's favorite noodle dish so I ordered it for her. She ended up not really eating this one because they made it really spicy with lots of jalapeno. I didn't like that either. We prefer it to have more curry flavor instead of the overpowering spiciness from jalapenos.

Capital Seafood is a big disappointment for us. The food was expensive, portion was small, and taste was just like your typical dim sum with nothing special. They charge the same price as Lunasia in Alhambra, but Lunasia has much much better dim sum. Dr. P and I have been to Capital Seafood in Irvine, and it was also quite disappointing. I don't think I'm a fan of this whole Capital Seafood group restaurants. They opened a new one in Irvine Spectrum as well. It looks very fancy when we peeked in while passing by. They charge high price because of their decor, not because of their food. It's very unlikely for us to return to this Arcadia Capital Seafood again. It's also very unlikely that we'll ever go to any Capital Seafood again.

Even though the food was disappointing, mom still enjoyed her birthday lunch with family. Happy birthday, mom! I'll take you to a better restaurant next year!

  1. You know surprisingly they are always busy especially one at Irvine. I am not a big fan either, i think the food just so so and it is more expensive than other Dim Sum place I been too.

    I agree with you 100%!
Maybe these people haven't been to other places?

  2. Next time when you're around Arcadia, take a try on Hop Li Restaurant(怡東). They are "San Gabriel" type (fact rate for all dim sum). Under new chief they have difference dim sum variety and lunch special on Chinese dishes. At extreme sunday rush hour, it take 20~30 mins to get a table. Most of the time get arrange within 5 mins. Dim Sum may not elegant but above average. Location on baldwin next to KFC.

    We've been there before actually.
But I would love to visit again now they've got a new chef.
    Thanks, Edward!

  3. I really like Capital. Though they are more expensive, I like I actually get good service for once in a dim sum place.

Really? I still prefer Lunasia more though.

  4. I know some people like this place like my husband and a friend of mine. I took my parents there once when they come to US to visit and they not very fond of it. However took my friend who is born and raise here and they loves it including my husband.

I guess everyone have different taste.
I still think the best dim sum is from Lunasia.
