[Laguna Beach] [Japanese] Mosun Sushi & Sake (CLOSED)

Mosun Sushi & Sake
680 S Coast Hwy
Laguna Beach, CA 92651
(949) 497-5646
(CLOSED)

What? Mosun Sushi is closed? We went there about a month ago, and really enjoyed the food and drink there. Now I'm just about to write about this place, went on Yelp to get their address and phone number, and found out they closed their door about a week ago! What happened?

We were thinking about going to Laguna Beach to have dinner and walk around a bit. Our favorite restaurant in Laguna Beach, K'ya Bistro, was fully booked. Then I found Mosun Sushi, and found out they had $6 sushi roll special on Sunday night. All sushi rolls were $6. Sounded like a good deal so off we went.

Mosun Saketini ($5.00)
Grey goose vodka, Premium sake, cranberry triple sec & lime.
Green Teani ($5.00)
Grey goose vodka, green tea liquer, triple sec & fresh lemon juice.

We got there around 6pm. Our waitress told us it was happy hour time, so all martini were $5 before 7pm. Scored! Dr. P ordered Mosun Saketini, and I got the Green Teani. Mosun Saketini was fruity, exactly that kind of girly drinks Dr. P likes. haha... My Green Teani tasted very strong. So Dr. P and I traded our martini.

Miso Soup ($4.00)

When our waitress was taking our order, she asked if we wanted to start the meal with miso soup or edamame. Dr. P decided to get a bowl of miso soup without asking for the price first. Later we found out it was $4 for a small bowl of miso soup. Way overpriced in my opinion! Dr. P said the miso soup was a bit watery. I tasted it and it WAS water. It seriously tasted like warm water with green onion. We told the waitress about it, and she took it back to the kitchen.

After a while, she brought us another bowl. Now this time it was a bowl of miso soup. The miso soup wasn't bad, but it was definitely not worth $4.

What The Heck ($6.00)
Spicy tuna roll and albacore, crushed garlic on top with jalapeno ponzu sauce.

We've always enjoyed spicy tuna roll. What The Heck was a fancy spicy tuna roll with albacore on top. I like the cucumber in the roll, which added some crunchiness to the bite, and the crushed garlic on top to add more flavor.

Hurricane ($6.00)
Chopped tuna, albacore, salmon, yellowtail mixed with spicy cream sauce and topped with salmon.

I wished I had a picture of Hurricane to show the inside of the sushi roll. Tuna + albacore + salmon + yellowtail! Yeah of course it tasted great!

Club M ($6.00)
Cucumber, avocado, asparagus topped with poki style diced tuna, salmon, white fish.

I loved this poki style sushi roll, Club M. A veggie roll made with cucumber, avocado, and asparagus was served with diced tuna, salmon, and albacore. I loved the sauce and thinly sliced onion with the fish. Delicious!

Spider Man ($6.00)
Soft shell crab, spicy tuna, shichimi cucumber and unagi on top with avocado.

Eel and Avocado roll are usually made with just California roll. But at Mosun they made their eel and avo roll with soft shell crab roll! Soft shell crab was so good. Loved the eel, too.

Kamikaze ($6.00)
Crab, spicy tuna topped seared salmon & lime.

Kamikaze was a very simple roll, and I think it was our favorite of the night. I think it was the slice of super thin lime that made this roll especially good. The lime and ponzu made the roll tasted light and refreshing.

We had a great dinner at Mosun, and the price was really reasonable, too. Dr. P and I were just talking about going back there. So sad to find out it was already shut down. :-(
