I told them that they can't stay in the kitchen because I don't want to accidentally trip over them and hurt them. I talk to Teddy and Twinkle all the time (mostly in Chinese too haha....). I think they can really understand me. I read in Divine Canine: The Monks' Way to a Happy, Obedient Dog that a good way to get your dogs to listen to you is looking straight into their eyes and tell them exactly what you want in a nice calm voice. Do not yell and scream. I have been doing that and it seemed to work, not all the time, but most of the time.
After I told them that they shouldn't stay in the kitchen, they went up to the landing of the stairs. They can see the kitchen and me directly from there. What smart dogs! They just sat there and watched me cooking, keeping me company the whole time. Awwww....

Lol my mom talks to my dog in chinese too. Amazingly enough, when I'm at http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com, and my mom calls dinner time, my dog is the first one in the kitchen...
