After taking my parents to a horrible lunch, they don't trust my restaurant suggestions anymore.  For dinner, they want to take me to a restaurant that they think it's good.  They said they've been to Ruben's Kitchen for Malaysian food a few times, and have never been disappointed.

咖喱海鮮湯麵 Curry Seafood Noodle Soup ($7.95)

Curry Seafood Noodle Soup was my dad's favorite.  But he doesn't eat it like a noodle soup.  Instead, he pour the thick curry soup over white rice.  That's his favorite way to eat this dish.  Lots of shrimp, fish cake, and squid in the noodle soup.  I love the puffy tofu that soaked up all the curry soup.  The soup was slightly spicy.  Delicious!

鐵板牛柳粒 Sizzling Fillet Mignon Kew ($9.95)

Sizzling Fillet Mignon Kew was so good with rice.  The Filet Mignon was very soft.  Lots of vegetables.  Yummy sauce that I poured over rice.

馬拉式海南雞 Malay Style Hainan Chicken ($7.95)

My mom's favorite was Malay Style Hainan Chicken.  The chicken was very very very very soft and tender.  I had no idea what the green dipping sauce was, but it was delicious.

Hainan Chicken came with chicken rice that was made with chicken stock and oil (?).  It was good enough to eat on its own.

I love everything we had for dinner that night.  This would be 10 stars comparing to the bad lunch we had.  Lesson learned.  I should always listen to my parents.  haha....

Since you moved down S. County, I would like to recommand you :Break of dawn, it's in the El Toro trader joe plaza. This was one of our favorite resturants when we lived in Mission Viejo. The breakfast is tremedous.

Break of Dawn has been on my "to-try" list for a long time.
Definitely will go try their breakfast soon. Thanks, Jessica!

  4. Hi Eileen!

When you are back in El Monte, try Little Malaysia. It is in the plaza on Peck between Little Caesars and King Taco. It is more authentic. Another one is Penang in West Covina in the Hong Kong Plaza. They even have the orange chopsticks that are commonly found at the street vendors in Malaysia. :)

    Thanks for the great suggestions.
Actually I've been to both restaurants.
    Little Malaysia: http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com/2008/04/el-monte-%E9%A6%AC%E4%BE%86%E8%A5%BF%E4%BA%9E%E6%96%99%E7%90%86-little-malaysia-restaurant/
    Penang: http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com/2010/01/west-covina-malaysian-%E9%A6%AC%E4%BE%86%E6%AA%B3%E5%9F%8E-penang-malaysian-cuisine/
Food are good at both places in my opinion.
My dad doesn't like Little Malaysia. He thinks food portion is small for its price.
And one time they went, they got bad service. So he refuses to go there again.
Penang was completely empty when we went.
It had a really weird vibe, although the food was still good.
