Today is my dad's birthday.  During my break between classes yesterday, I went http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com and took him out for a birthday lunch.  Dad wanted to have Korean BBQ, and he said he heard good things about Hwaro Korean BBQ & Tofu from my brother and he would like to try it.

They offered good priced lunch special, range from $6.99 to $12.99 (the more expensive ones are the BBQ + tofu combo).  But dad had his mind set on all you can eat Korean BBQ.  Lunch price is $12.99 per person with 5 choices of meat.

Banchan

The waiters brought us 6 banchan, lettuce, and spicy bean paste.  The lettuce looked and tasted fresh and crisp, but they should dry the lettuce.  It was all wet, and kept on dripping water when we ate it.  Actually I still preferred to have the Korean style salad with my BBQ.  Mom and I like their potato salad the most.

The kimchi tasted a little sweet, and the glass noodle tasted really sweet.  They added too much sugar!  Service was good.  Every time we finish a banchan, our waiter will fill the plate again immediately.

Soup

Each of us was given a bowl of bean paste soup.  This is the Korean version of miso soup.  There were tofu and zucchini in the soup.  I liked it, but mom thought it was too salty.

All You Can Eat BBQ Lunch ($12.99/person)

There were 5 kinds of meat, marinated beef, sliced beef brisket, chicken, pork belly, and marinated pork.  I thought everything was pretty good, but their marinate is on the sweeter side.

The waitstaff here weren't Korean, nor Chinese (since the restaurant is located in a Chinese plaza).  They were speaking in an Asian language that I don't recognized.  Maybe Thai or Indonesian?  The food wasn't bad, but somehow it didn't taste authentic Korean to me.  I thought everything was a bit too sweet.

Service is really good here though.  Our waiter was friendly and very attentive.  Dad got really full, but he commented that he thought Cham Sut Gol in Rowland Heights is better.  I also like Cham Sut Gol better because there are more banchan, they have salad, and STEAMED EGG!  You gotta have steamed egg with Korean BBQ.  Too bad Hwaro Korean BBQ & Tofu doesn't offer the egg.

After lunch, we stopped by at Chinese American Live Poultry (華美雞鴨欄中心) in Rosemead to buy a chicken for soup.  Now I know where to go to buy rooster testicles!  haha....  I was tricked into eating one a long time ago in Taiwan.  I..... hate it!  Who else had rooster testicles before?  Do you like it?

  6. I LOVE rooster testicles! I usually cook mine with sesame oil, ginger, and rice wine. :D

    YOU DO? haha....
I had it that one time in a seafood restaurant in Taiwan.
I thought the texture was really strange, and hated it ever since.
I heard it's really good for guys. Is that why you cook it for your husband? (*wink wink) haha...

  7. After reading your blog, I went to try this korean bbq place on friday night. Their meat is really fresh. But their service was not that good that night. Maybe because they were really busy. We had to call the waiters(different ones) several times to get our meat. It took them more than 15 minutes to bring a new plate of meat. So by the second plate we were all fulled by finish eating the tofu soup and the banchan.

When we were there for lunch, there were only maybe 3 other tables.
So service was very good. We never had to call them when we needed more banchan.
I guess when they are too busy at night time, they can't provide the same service.
Maybe they need to hire more staff?
