I've known Tammy since we were 16 years old.  I never miss her birthday, except the years when I was in Taiwan.  This year she decided to have her birthday dinner at Tokyo Shabu Shabu.

We were seated inside a small booth.  We had 9 people, and the table had no room for all the plates.  We had to put some plate on the chairs.

Jelly Fish ($3.99)

We started the meal with Jelly Fish while waiting for people to arrive.  The Jelly Fish was alright.

Chicken Wings ($3.99)

Chicken Wings were crispy, and we were supposed to eat those with mayonnaise?  That was a little strange.

Dipping Sauces

There were two dipping sauces, ponzu sauce that didn't taste like real ponzu sauce, and peanut sauce that was very watery.

Broth

We were giving one 4 compartments pots for 9 people.  Everybody ordered spicy miso broth, and I ordered regular shabu shabu broth.  My broth was just water with a piece of seaweed in it.  The spicy miso broth was pretty spicy.

Beef ($14.99)

Most people ordered beef.  The meat quality was alright.

Vegetable Plate

Vegetable plate looked kinda sad.  There weren't much stuff in it.  I really wish they would give us more cabbage.  There were only like 6 small pieces of cabbage on the plate.

Noodle

They also gave us a small bowl of ramen noodle to cook at the end.  Maybe I cooked the noodle for too long.  It turned out to all soft and mushy.

After the meal, the waitstaff sang happy birthday for Tammy, and brought a free scoop of green tea ice cream for her.

Green Tea Ice Cream ($1.99)

The rest of us had to order our Green Tea Ice Cream.  The ice cream was my favorite item of the night.

I didn't really like the food at Tokyo Shabu Shabu.  This was more like a Chinese style shabu shabu place.  The quality wasn't as good as California Shabu Shabu, which I visited last month.  The broth was very oily at the end, and I didn't drink any.  The dipping sauces wasn't that good.  The noodle was bad.  I don't think I would visit Tokyo Shabu Shabu again.  But one of our friend said this was her favorite shabu shabu place.  So everybody has different taste.  I am pretty sure a lot of people like Tokyo Shabu Shabu a lot because their business was very good.

But food wasn't that important that night.  The most important thing was I get to hang out with my friends and wishing happy birthday to my friend Tammy.  Hope to see you girls again soon!

  1. The Japanese have an obsession with mayonnaise, and yes, they eat it with fried chicken (karaage). It sounds a little weird, but trust me, it's delicious. Of course, it'll also give you a heart attack, but if you're skinny, why not go for it?

haha I did tried the wing with mayonnaise. It was strange, but in a good way.
I wish I am skinny so I can eat tons of that. haha....

    Japanese mayo does taste different.
I like the ones from Japanese supermarket so much better than American kind.
