[Costa Mesa] [Japanese] Sushi Zen Bistro

Sushi Zen Bistro
1875 Newport Blvd #A100
Costa Mesa, CA 92627
(949) 722-2520

Restaurant.com had a 80% off sale, and I bought 7 gift certificates during the sale.  I wanted to use the GC to try more Orange County restaurants.  The first GC we used was for Sushi Zen Bistro.  I came http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com late from class, and this restaurant opens till 10:30pm.  So off we went for a late dinner.

Sushi Zen Bistro is in Costa Mesa, but at the border of Newport Beach.  There is a Yardhouse in the same plaza.  There were a lot of crazy young (maybe drunk) driver at the parking lot.  We almost got hit by a car when we were walking in there.

The restaurant was really dark.  It had a lounge bar feel to it, rather than a restaurant.

Edamame

The meal started with complimentary edamame.

Miso Soup

Miso soup came with the sashimi dinner we ordered.  Nothing too special about the soup.  Just your standard miso soup.

Zen Roll with Jalapeno ($12.95)
Tuna, Salmon, Scallop, Fried Jalapeno, Avocado, Cucumber, Sprout, Gobo

Zen Roll with Jalapeno sounded really good when we read it on the menu.  It had tuna, salmon, scallop, fried jalapeno, avocado, cucumber, sprout and gobo.

It was wrapped with soy paper, and that didn't hold the roll well.  None of us could pick up a complete roll with our chopstick.  The roll just kept on falling apart.  But other than that, the roll tasted great.  The fried jalapeno wasn't spicy at all.  It just added a little crunch to the roll.  The combination of tuna, salmon, and scallop was yummy.

Mixed Sashimi ($28.95)
Chef's choice f assorted fresh sashimi. Tuna, Salmon, Yellowtail, Halibut and Albacore.

Mixed Sashimi came with 3 pieces of tuna, 3 pieces of salmon, 3 pieces of yellowtail, 3 pieces of halibut and 4 pieces of albacore.  It also came with some marinated cucumber.  The fish was fresh, and we could really taste the good quality of the sashimi.  I especially like the special horseradish sauce with the albacore and halibut.

We had to order more than $35 to use the $25 GC.  One roll and one sashimi dinner was about $40.  But they also added 18% gratuity.  So at the end, we still spent about $30 for the meal.  The food was great at Sushi Zen Bistro.  Service was really good, too.  But it was so expensive, even with the GC!  They have happy hour on weekday, and all rolls are 1/2 off.  Maybe next time we should just go during happy hour.

  1. you know what, after a few time I've been using GC, sometimes turned out it might cost the same or more without using GC comparing to the amount after all??

I did saved money at a few restaurants using the GCs before.
But some restaurants do the discount differently.
Like after adding taxes and tips then subtracting the GC amount or something like that.
