JTYH Restaurant

My dad loves dumplings and noodles.  He goes to dumplings and noodles restaurant pretty much once a week.  He and my mom discovered JTYH Restaurant, and has been going there for weeks.  They have been telling me how good and cheap the food is.  Two weeks ago, they tried to take me there for lunch on a Tuesday.  And we found out that they are closed every Tuesday.

This restaurant is owned by the same staffs from Heavy Noodeling (山西刀削麵) in Monterey Park.  I think the sing "Original Heavy Noodeling" is the reason my parents went in the restaurant.

Cold Celery

The meal started with a plate of complimentary Cold Celery.

Spicy Wontons ($2.95)

I couldn't believe they only charge $2.95 for 10 Spicy Wontons. This dish always costs about $5~7 at any restaurant.  Not only it is cheap, it is good!  The wontons were filled with pork filling, and the spicy sauce tasted great.  I would order this dish every time I dine here.

Pan Fried Onion Cake ($2.95)

Pan Fried Onion Cake was fluffy, and we like how it wasn't oily at all.

Lamb Dough Sliced Fried Noodle ($6.25)

Lamb Dough Sliced Fried Noodle was our favorite dish.  Portion was huge.  Three of us only managed to finish half plate.  There were tons of tender sliced lamb, lots of vegetable, and some black ear mushroom.  The dough sliced noodle was chewy and very "Q".

Steamed Buns with Seafood (10) ($6.95)

The buns can be ordered steamed or pan fried.  We ordered Steamed Buns with Seafood.  Each order comes with 10 fat buns.

My first bite, pork, egg, and Chinese leek.

Second bite, shrimp.  The filling was great, but what I really love was the bun skin.  It was so soft and fluffy.

Braised Pork Intestines ($7.95)

JTYH also serves some Szechuan dishes.  I thought it was strange for a dumplings and noodle restaurant to serve spicy Szechuan food.  But when I saw intestine on the menu, I couldn't resist and ordered it.  It was a mistake!  It said "braised" intestines on the menu, but it was fried instead.  It was probably over-fried, too.  The intestines were really hard, and very crunchy but not in a good way.  To make it even worse, the intestines smelt bad and tasted bad.  It was like they didn't clean it all that well.  We left almost all of it uneaten.  When the waitress asked us about it, we told her the intestines had a strange smell and taste.  Her answer was "some people can't take the natural taste of intestine".  Ok.  I know my intestine, and that is not how good intestine should taste like.  Horrible dish!

I like JTYH.  The wontons, noodle, and buns were very good.  But I will never order intestine from here again.  Actually, I don't think I'll order any Szechuan food here in the future.  They should get rid of all those dishes on their menu, and just focus on what they are good at, dumplings, buns and noodles.

  1. Yuck, too bad about the intestines. There's nothing worse than intestines that have an "odor." It's not the "natural" taste, it's the taste of not cleaning them well. :(

    It was really gross!

  2. The lamb noodle dish looks so good. And the green onion pancake! And the seafood buns! The prices seem very reasonable.

Yup, everything was great, except the intestines.

  8. Dough cut noodle is wonderful
we order 羊肉炒刀削麵 too ! I give "A" for this dish
not too oily not to salty just right & good 鍋氣
and portion is big enough for 2 to share as meal

I thinks chef done a good job on "發麵" + skin
but filling was little be small. But $6.95 for 10pcs still is a "steal"

Now I am busy telling all my friends about this place

    thanks again

The lamb noodle was the best!
I also thought the bun skin was better than the filling.

  9. That is really strange, because most of people who disdain pork intestines thoroughly enjoyed the fried version everyone I've introduced the dish to them.. not to mention the SZ peppercorn and chili completely remove any test of dirty piginess.

The day we had it was pretty bad.
Maybe it was just an off day?
