October 24, last Saturday was my mom's birthday.  But my brother had to work on that day, so we had birthday dinner with my mom on Friday night.  My parents picked the restaurant, Lake Spring Shanghai Restaurant, because they had lunch here before a thought the food was good.

鎮四寶 Sauteed Four-Treasures in Hot Sauce ($9.95)

We started with Sauteed Four-Treasures in Hot Sauce.  But since mom doesn't eat spicy food, we requested to have it prepared non-spicy.  The four treasures were green bean, dried radish, mushroom, and pork.  This dish was good with rice.  The leftover would make really good fried rice.

青鱔糊 Fried Eel and Chives ($12.95)

Fried Eel and Chives was pretty good, but a little bit on the sweeter side.  Mom thought it was too sweet, but the rest of us still enjoyed it.

肴豬腳 House Special Ham Hock ($18.00)

House Special Ham Hock was huge.  The meat was tender, and the best part was the fat.  The waitress had suggested us to order Ham Hock Two Ways.  For an extra $7, they will make a soup with the ham hock bones.  It sounded good.  They took the bones about half way through our meal to make the soup.

水煮兩樣 (牛、肥腸) Water Boiled Two Kind (Beef, Pork Intestine) ($10.95)

Dad knew Dr. P's favorite dish is Water Boiled, so he ordered it for Dr. P.  I don't know why would they serve this Szechuan dish at a Shanghai restaurant though.  The dish wasn't too bad, but it was too "numbing".  I couldn't feel my tongue and my lips after a few bites.  And.... my stomach started hurting after eating this dish.

雪菜百葉毛豆 Bean Curd Sheets with Vegetable and Edamame ($8.95)

Bean Curd Sheets with Vegetable and Edamame was a light vegetarian dish to balance the heavy meaty meal.  Mom liked it.

龍蝦伊麵 Lobster with Noodle

They have special dinner offer right now.  When ordering more than $20, you get a free steamed whole fish.  When ordering more than $30, you get a free lobster.  We got the lobster with noodle.  It was a small lobster, but good enough for free.  The lobster didn't have too much meat, but the noodle was delicious.

蒜苗臘肉 Garlic Ham with Cured Pork ($8.95)

Garlic Ham with Cured Pork was the name of the menu.  What is garlic ham?  I liked the ured pork in this dish.  It had that yummy smoky flavor.  The bamboo shoot was great, too.

肴豬腳大骨湯 House Special Ham Hock Bone Soup ($7.00)

They made the House Special Ham Hock Bone Soup with Chinese cabbage, tofu, and glass noodle.  The soup was really tasty.  We all had two bowls.

八寶甜飯 Mixed Steamed Rice Cake

Every table gets a free Mixed Steamed Rice Cake at the end of the meal.  This was steamed sweet sticky rice.

Inside the sticky rice, there was sweet red bean paste.  It was alright.  But again, it was free.

Everybody was happy with dinner.  We had a lot of leftover to take http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com.  For a big group dinner, having Chinese food is definitely a lot cheaper than having American food.

Can you believe my mom is 60 years old?  She looks so young!  Dr. P kept on saying we look like sisters, and my mom was so happy and couldn't stop smiling.  Happy birthday, 馬咪!

  7. I quest "garlic ham" is actually "garlic stem". It is the above ground part of the young garlic plant.

I see. Thanks for the info.
