[Irvine] [Japanese] 靜間 Shizuma Ramen

Shizuma Ramen
靜間

4250 Barranca Parkway #Q
Irvine, CA 92604

I found this new ramen shop in Irvine from a coupon booklet we received in the mail. With a $5 off coupon, we went to try this new restaurant.

Even though this restaurant is called Shizuma "Ramen", they only have 6 different ramens on the menu.  They also have a few rice bowls, curry, katsu, and hand rolls.

The restaurant isn't very big, but it's bright ad comfy.  All the waitstaff, as well as the kitchen workers, were Hispanic.  A man who appears to be the owner who was chatting with his friends and smoking outside the door is Chinese.  So I don't think this is a very authentic Japanese ramen shop.

Spicy Tuna Hand Roll ($2.85)

Dr. P ordered a Spicy Tuna Hand Roll to start the meal.  The spicy tuna was really spicy, exactly the way Dr. P likes it.  However, the rice in the hand roll was just regular white rice with no flavor, and it was hot.

Miso Soup

My bento came with a bowl of miso soup.  It was pretty good.

Curry Chicken Katsu Bento ($7.35)

My Curry Chicken Katsu Bento also came with a side salad and 4 goyza.  The goyza was pretty tasty.  Side salad's ginger dressing was good, too.  But the main course, curry chicken katsu, was just alright.  The curry was watery, and didn't even have that much curry flavor.  Chicken katsu wasn't too bad, but the curry made it bad.

Spicy Beef Shoyu Ramen ($6.39)

Dr. P ordered Spicy Beef Shoyu Ramen.  This was the number one ramen on their menu, so we assumed it must be their specialty.  The ramen wasn't spicy at all.  The beef tasted more like Chinese style stir fried beef than Japanese.  The soup base tasted like instant noodle soup base.  The ramen noodle also tasted like instant noodle.  Dr. P thought the ramen was horrible, and I didn't like it much, either.

The only good thing I can say about this restaurant was probably the price is cheap, and portion is big.  So if you are a college student who doesn't care about the taste of food, who just wants something cheap and get really full, Shizuma Ramen will be a good choice.  But for us, we don't think we'd come back again.
