We are back from our honeymoon in Costa Rica! Now that I am officially Mrs. P, it's time to catch up on writing.... ^_^
We went to Anaheim to visit Dr. P's 100-year-old grandma. She doesn't speak English, and I don't speak Korean. But she kept on looking at me, and just smiled. When we were leaving, she held my hands and said something to me in Korean. I didn't understand her, but she made me feel happy. After the visit, we went to grab dinner with Dr. P's family at Wang Tcheng, a Korean style Chinese restaurant.
Dr. P said that his family came to this restaurant for his niece's birthday before, and he thought the food was pretty good. The restaurant has nice decor, but that also reflects on their price.
Hite Beer
Dr. P shared a bottle of his favorite Korean beer, Hite, with his brother.
Kimchi & Spicy Celery
Since it's a Korean Chinese restaurant, we got some banchan before the meal started. Kimchi was good, and I like the spicy celery even more.
酸辣湯 Hot & Sour Soup ($8.95)
Hot & Sour Soup was really spicy. I think they went a little overboard with the pepper. Other than that, the soup was really tasty. Dr. P's brother's girlfriend does not eat meat. Even though there was no meat in the soup, the waiter told us that the soup was made with beef stock so she couldn't eat it.
海鮮三寶 Three Seafood Delight ($21.95)
Scallops, shrimp and sea cucumber with vegetables
We ordered mostly seafood dishes for Dr. P's brother's girlfriend. Three Seafood Delight had scallops, shrimp and sea cucumber. Seafood tasted fresh, but there was nothing special about the flavor. It was sauteed with a brown sauce. The Korean version of brown sauce tasted sweeter than the Chinese version.
I don't think I've ever had sea cucumber with skin like that before. It looked a bit too scary for me. I refused to eat it because it looked like snake to me. Yuck!
魚香魚片 Fish Fillet in Spicy Garlic Sauce ($17.75)
Water chestnut, carrot, straw mushroom, squash and asparagus
Fish Fillet in Spicy Garlic Sauce was everyone's favorite. Again, the sauce was on the sweeter side. But the garlic added a lot of flavor.
糖醋豬肉 Pork in Sweet & Sour Sauce ($11.75)
Onion, green onion, ear mushroom, carrot and pineapple
Korean sweet & sour pork looked and tasted very different from the Chinese version. I think the Chinese version is made with ketchup (?), and I have no idea how the Korean version is made. Even though it was very different, I still enjoyed it though.
炸醬麵 Chachiang Mein ($7.25)
Regular Chachiang Mein came with pork. But we changed it to seafood Chachiang Mein for maybe $6 more I think. $13 for a really small bowl of Chachiang Mein, and each of us only got a few bites. I thought the Chachiang Mein was really good, but it was still too expensive. We changed it to seafood for Dr. P's brother's girlfriend, but she only took one bite and left the rest uneaten. It was her first time trying chachiang mein (she's not Asian), and I don't think she liked it.
Orange
After the meal, we were treated to some oranges.
The total bill was about $80. This is definitely a lot more expensive than a Chinese Chinese restaurant. And food is much better in Chinese Chinese restaurant in my opinion. But Korean Chinese has its own uniqueness. To me, it's almost like a completely different cuisine than Chinese food. I still prefer real Chinese food, but trying Korean Chinese is fun. Although I only wish to try once in a while though.

Korean chinese food still has some unique elements. I still love my spicy szechuan food though!!
ReplyDeleteWe should go get some spicy Chinese this weekend!
Hi Eileen! (Oh, I should say “Mrs. Park”!) You're finally back! I bet you and Dr. P must have a romantic and wonderful honeymoon.
ReplyDeleteI think the restaurant used fresh sea cucumbers instead of the dried ones that Chinese restaurant use. Btw the dried ones are much more expensive than the fresh ones and take more time to prepare.
That's what Dr. P told me. He said fresh sea cucumber looks like that.
I wonder how come the dried ones are more expensive. But for most food, isn't fresh ones more expensive?
Congrats Eileen :)
ReplyDeleteI don't think Chinese sweet and sour is made with ketchup--although I don't know what it IS made with :)
I think the idea of Korean-Chinese food is interesting--when I was in Japan, most of the Chinese food was totally different from anything that resembles Chinese food, similar to totally Americanized Chinese food. It was good though :)
Seems like many countries have their own take on Chinese food.
I've had Japanese style Chinese food here in Los Angeles, usually at Japanese supermarket food courts.
I like their fried rice and dumplings. It definitely tasted more American than Chinese.
Korean Chinese is also more similar to American Chinese.
Even though it's not authentic Chinese, still tastes pretty good though. ^^
Congratulations! Woohoo! :)
ReplyDeletehaha Thank you, Marie!
Eileen, congratulations to you & Dr P....I wish you much happiness!

So Mrs. P?
ReplyDeleteFrom the events of the matrimony, it looks like the Chinese definitely won BIG (the choice for the wedding banquet was Chinese)!!!
However, it looks like the Korean won bigger...someone as especial as Eileen, and an introduction to the Chinese/Taiwanese cuisine.
I don't know! I'm still not sure what the score is here!
: )
hahahaha You're so cute, Joanna.
Congratulations Eileen, or Mrs. P. I can't wait to see your wedding pictures too. Hope you enjoyed Costa Rica (anywhere with Mr. P is heaven, right?)
