This semester, I am taking a work experience class. We need 4 work experience to graduate from the Registered Veterinary Technician program. My first work experience is to work with rescued greyhounds from Greyhound Pets of America. We get 2 sets of 8 dogs a semester. They are rescued race dogs from Mexico. Some of them are getting older, and some of them just don't run fast enough. So they were about to be killed and were rescued by this non-profit organization. They were abused pretty bad and weren't properly cared for. So we take care of them for the semester, treat any disease they might have, neuter/spay them, and clean their teeth. Also most of them do not know how to interact with people in the beginning. We try to socialize with them, get them used to people and trust people. By the time they leave our school, they are 100% ready for adoption.
I just finished working with the first set of 8 dogs. It was such a rewarding experience. The dogs were so scared and timid in the beginning. In 7 weeks, they had became so friendly, affectionate, and sweet toward people. They finally learned to just be happy and know that there are people like us who love them. 3 of the dogs already got adopted. Does anybody want to adopt an adorable greyhound?
Michelle
Michelle has the prettest eyes. She loves to be hugged and patted. She also likes to play catch. She gives little kisses with her nose on my nose all the time.
Here is a video of Michelle lounging in her bed.
Sun King
Just like his nae, Sun King loves the sun. He is an very energetic boy who likes to run around on the grass. He is very muscular and handsome.
Ringo
Ringo has the leader personality and likes to be the center of attention. He is very affectionate with people, but he gets jealous of other dogs sometimes. I think he needs a owner who does not have other pets and who can give him all his/her love.
Pepper
Pepper is a playful puppy. He is always ready for a walk or to play catch on the grass. He loves to be hugged. Also he likes to rest his head in people's arms when he takes a nap.
Here is a video of Pepper having some puppy fun with his toy on the lawn.
Revolution
Revolution always sleep in funny poses. He is super sweet, and he loves to play. He wears white tuxedo, 4 white socks, and white tip on his tail.
A video of Revolution playing with his toy.
Bill
Bill seemed older than the rest of the dogs. He is very calm and likes to sleep a lot. But he gets really excited when he takes a walk. Bill found a http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com already.
Sunshine
Sunshine is really my sunshine. She is one of the sweetest dogs I've known. She is so affectionate and loves to wiggle her tails. She loves to nap on my laps all the time. I am glad that Sunshine found a http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com right after she left our school.
Also there was a boy named McCartney. He got adopted on the 3rd week so I don't have a picture of him.
If you are interested in adopting a greyhound, please go to Greyhound Pets of America for more information. I hope all of them will find http://www.eileenlikestoeat.coms real soon.

Hey Eileen, I just happened to stumble upon this blog. I'm in Rowland Heights too and I'm looking to adopt a pair of greyhounds. I submitted my application to GPA-LA/OC about a week ago but haven't heard anything back from them. Since some of them had profiles of "Mt. Sac" dogs I thought you might know who to contact about these dogs. Can you tell me something about Mt. Sac dogs? How do they differ from other foster dogs? Also, from personal experience, do you think they're suitable for a grad student? Next year I'll be out for about 8 hours a day, that's why I'm looking to adopt a pair of them. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteWe get 15 or 16 greyhounds at Mt SAC each semester.
The students take care of them and play with them daily to let them get used to people.
As you know, they weren't treated as pet in Mexico. They never knew "love" from people.
Most of them are really timid and scared of people in the beginning.
But by the end of the semester, they all turn into the loving and playful dogs like how they are supposed to be.
We also neuter/spay and clean their teeth in surgical nursing class (which I am in right now).
Also if they have any health problem, we treat them. Also they are potty trained at our school also.
By the time they leave Mt SAC at the end of the semester, they are 100% healthy (both physically and mentally) and 100% ready for adoption.
If I were you, I would definitely pick a Mt SAC greyhound.
Greyhounds are the biggest couch potato. They are very comfortable being alone and just lounge throughout the day.
But they do require exercise since they are hound dogs. You probably need to walk them minimum once a day, preferably twice a day.
It's great to adopt a pair so they can keep each other company when you are not around.
Good luck on your adoption! You have such a big heart! ^^
Please let me know how the adoption goes. I might know the dogs! ^_*
Thanks for the reply. I still haven't heard anything from GPA-LA/OC. I'm getting the feeling that they aren't comfortable adopting to a young grad student, but that may just be me. Anyway, I contacted a couple other greyhound adoption organization and of the three, only one responded. Their website is adoptastar.org. I don't know if they are affiliated with Mt. Sac greys in any way, but I would venture to guess they don't. I'll let you know how things go. Thanks for your help!
ReplyDeleteYeah I heard the adoption process can be slow.
I hope you hear back from the adoption agencies soon. ^^
