I bought a Groupon for Simply Fondue. The deal was $45 for a four-course fondue feast for 2 people (a $98 value). The only other time I had fondue was at Melting Pot in Pasadena. I remember the food was pretty good, but it was expensive to a point that I didn't think it was worth the price.
Ever since that time, we never really thought of having fondue again. Well, we prefer Asian style hot pot or shabu shabu more than American style fondue. But $45 for two people sounds like a bargain. So we went to try fondue again.
They have different daily special. We went on a Monday, so it was 1/2 Martinis night. Woohoo!!!!
Chocolate Covered Strawberry Martini (
Stoli strasberi, chocolate vodka, strawberry puree, cacao, cream
French Martini (
Vodka, chambord, pineapple juice
Just by looking at the martinis, I'm sure you all can tell which one was Dr. P's. Of course he ordered the very manly pink French Martini. haha.... Mine was Chocolate Covered Strawberry Martini. I liked my martini, although I couldn't taste any strawberry at all. It just tasted like chocolate martini, but it was good. Their martinis were strong. We were both pretty buzzed from just one glass.
Traditional Swiss Chalet Cheese Fondue ($15.00)
Imported Gruyere and Emmenthaler cheeses, Chablis, Kirshwasser brandy, garlic and spices
The 4-course meal for two included one cheese fondue, two salads, one combination dinner entree for two, and one chocolate fondue. For our cheese fondue, we picked Traditional Swiss Chalet Cheese Fondue. We picked this one becuase we wanted to try the traditional style cheese fondue. When our waitress was preparing our fondue, she told us that not too many people care for the taste of this cheese fondue. But if we were Swiss cheese fans, we would love this one. I thought, hmmm... I like Swiss cheese in my sandwich. I guess I am a Swiss cheese fan? But oops, after tasting it, I guess I am not a Swiss cheese fan. The cheese had a slightly bitter taste to it. I wasn't sure it was from the brandy, or the white wine, or the cheese itself, it just tasted funny and I didn't like it at all. Oh well, at least I learned not to order Swiss cheese fondue again. But, if you know you like Swiss cheese, I am sure you will like this one.
Assortment of Fresh Breads, Crisp Vegetables & Fruits
Cheese fondue was served with bread, vegetables and fruits. I did enjoyed the soft bread, crunchy vegetables, and sweet fruits, but just not with the Swiss cheese fondue. Our own fault for ordering that one though.
The Greek Salad ($9.00)
Romaine, kalamata olives, sweet red onion, diced cucumber, juicy tomato halves, crumpled feta cheese, and herbal croutons tossed in our homemade vinaigrette dressing
For our second course, Dr. P got The Greek Salad. It was tasty with my favorite feta cheese. Hey, they should've had a feta cheese fondue! haha....
Gorgonzola Field Greens Salad ($9.00)
Mixed field greens, juicy tomatoes, diced cucumber, California chopped walnuts and herbal croutons tossed in our house raspberry vinaigrette dressing and topped with crumbled gorgonzola cheese
I ordered Gorgonzola Field Greens Sald. I just loved everything in this salad. Dr. P thought this salad tasted better than his Greek Salad, and I agreed.
Fondue Grill
A healthy and lite cooking style grilled in a garlic olive oil right at your table
We did the traditional "soup" fondue when we visited Melting Pot. We thought the meat and seafood came out just ok with that cooking method. So this time for our main course, we wanted to try something different and picked Fondue Grill as our cooking style. Almost every table in the restaurant picked this method to cook the main course. Our waitress also recommended it.
Fondue Feast ($39.00/person)
Six pepper beef, bacon wrapped tenderloin, herb crusted pork tenderloin, roasted garlic chicken, lemon pepper chicken, jamaican jerk chicken
For our Fondue Feast for tow, we got to pick 9 different meat/poultry/seafood (3 each) from their menu. The meat we picked were six pepper beef, bacon wrapped tenderloin, and herb crusted pork tenderloin. For poultry, we picked roasted garlic chicken, lemon pepper chicken, and Jamaican jerk chicken.
Fondue Feast ($39.00/person)
Black tiger shrimp, sea scallops, and ahi sesame tuna
For seafood, we got black tiger shrimp, sea scallops, and ahi sesame tuna. There were also vegetables and ravioli. Each item on the plate came with two pieces.
Dipping Sauces
So many dipping sauces. My favorite one was the mango curry sauce.
Six pepper beef, bacon wrapped tenderloin, herb crusted pork tenderloin
The meat smelt soooooo good when it was cooking on the grill. All the meat already had so much flavor that dipping sauces wasn't really neccessary. My favorite out of this batch was the bacon wrapped tenderloin. Everything just tasted better with bacon. haha....
Roasted garlic chicken, lemon pepper chicken, jamaican jerk chicken, sweet potatoes, squash
Our favorite in this round was Roasted Garlic Chicken.
Black tiger shrimp, sea scallops, ahi sesame tuna, zucchini, potatoes
We loved all the seafood. The only this was... were those black tiger shrimp? They looked like regular shrimp to me. I thought black tiger shrimp should be way bigger?
Ravioli, mushroom, green pepper
The portobello mushroom was so tasty and juicy. At first I thought it wasn't much food since every item was pretty much just one bite. But surprisingly we were stuffed after we finished the main course.
Raspberry Cabernet Chocolate Fondue ($10.00/person)
Rich dark chocolate, raspberry sauce and a hint of cabernet... luxuriously delicious
But of course there's always room for dessert. We picked Raspberry Cabernet as our chocolate fondue. I love the combination of raspberry and chocolate. By the way, have you tried the raspberry mocha from Peet's Coffee? It's delicious!
Pound cake, triple chunk brownies, maraschino cherries, strawberries, banana slices, fresh pineapple chunks, rice crispy squares, rolled cookies, peanut butter balls, and cinnamon sugar balls
All the goodies that were served with Chocolate Fondue.
Jumbo Marshmallows
When Cabernet was added to the melted chocolate, there were flame to cook the marshmallows. Yum!
It was a really fun and delicious dinner. Personally we thought Simply Fondue was better than Melting Pot. But still, if I have to pay $100 for this dinner, I would think it's too expensive. But for $50, it was a good deal. I would definitely come back again.... when there's another one of those Groupon deals.

I never feel quite as satisfied (quantity never seemed sufficient) after a meal at Melting Pot as I would at a Chinese Hot Pot restaurant.
ReplyDeleteWow, that Groupon sure was worth it!
I agree! Chinese hot pot taste better, has bigger portion, is cheaper, and more satisfying.
But that Groupon was definitely a good deal. So it's nice to try something different sometime.
