Lu's Garden is a restaurant specialize in Taiwanese style "Porridage & Small Dishes". When I was living in Taipei, I love having "Porridage & Small Dishes" for a late night snack. Since the servings are small, you can order a variety of dishes to go with your porridage (or white rice if you prefer).
Dr. P and I had a "Saw" marathon at http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com. We watched Saw 1~3 for 6 hours straight! After we finished the movies, it was already 10pm. I immediately thought of Lu's Garden. My family used to come here a lot. But for some reason, we haven't been back for a long time. Well, after this visit, I don't think I'll be back for a even longer time.
Stewed Pork Belly ($6.95)
The Stewed Pork Belly was my favorite dish at Lu's Garden. It tasted just as good as I remembered it. But my god, this tiny plate cost $6.75! I couldn't believe the price when I saw the bill. Seriously, the plate was tiny. It was the size of a sauce dish. There were about 6 pieces of pork. And that was $6.95? I could order a big pot of stewed pork belly at some other Chinese restaurant for that price.
Three Cup Chicken ($5.95)
I didn't like the Three Cup Chicken. It just didn't have the true "three cup" flavor. Again, 4 pices of chicken in a sauce dish cost way too much money.
Minced Pork with Pickle ($4.95)
The minced pork with pickle was pretty good. I like to mix it with rice. But I can make this at http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com for much cheaper price.
Mustard Green ($4.95)
We wanted some green to balance the meal. Simple sauteed mustard green with ginger. Pretty good.
I do like the food here, but I think the price is ridiculously expensive. Even the porridage was expesive, $1.25 per person. Small bowl of white rice was $0.95. So our simple bite size late dinner cost $30+. Definately a lot more than what I expected. "Porridage & Small Dishes" are not supposed to be this pricy. So even though food's good, for the price, I don't think I'll be back here any time soon.

Haven't been there for a long time. I used to like their eggplant a lot. But yeah those prices are too high..
ReplyDeleteOooh that pork belly looks so YUMMY! **drool drool** It's so fatty and tempting! ^_^
ReplyDeleteDinner本來就是over price
Did they raise their price? I haven't been there for awhile too. I don't recall their prices were this high.
ReplyDeleteI haven't been there for a long time, too. I think the prices were definitely raised. And you are right about how ridiculous it is to charge THAT much for a TINY portion!! I don't think I'd go back there anytime soon after being shocked by the high prices.
Hi Eileen,
ReplyDeleteThanks for the review. I remember passing by this place when visiting my friends in the area; I'll be sure to avoid it (sounds like it's not a good value).
(BTW, there's a new place for some interesting and creative desserts (another one :) that I just went to; thought you might be interested (The Bazaar) (^_~))
my bf watched saw 1-3 from Mon- WEd,hahaa
I heard this restaurant form couple of my friends. They rip off people. One guy went there and ordered 5 quick fry dishs; he was charged for $75.
ReplyDeleteDinner time came and we weren't quite sure what we felt like so we were headed to that Korean Tofu place in the same parking lot. We walked around and decided to try Lu's. We actually quite enjoyed the casualness and simple meal but thought it was very pricey for what you get. We had very delicious stewed bamboo shoots, cold cucumber salad, tiny salted fish w/peanuts/veggies; the eggplants were oily as were the squids; pigs feet were cold. So some dishes were better than others. We had 8 dishes for 4 of us and spent $62 w tips. We wanted variety but you can't do any combos. Can't imagine their ingredients having cost more than 10-15% of the bill and their cost of operations is minimum...so being a first timer, I am shocked @ their prices given the competitive nature of this area!! Too bad as we would have returned for this type of 'comfort' food. Are there any other places which serve these type of Taiwanese porridge and small dishes in the area?
ReplyDeleteI don't think there's any other restaurants serving this kind of food around the area.
Maybe that's why they are able to charge such a ridiculously high price.
