Wen lives in OC and only comes up to LA once in a while.  So every time she visits me in LA, we always try to eat as much as we can.  haha....  I know Little J likes ice cream a lot so I wanted to take Wen's family to my favorite ice cream shop, Scoops!

Scoops was BUSY on Saturday night.  Crowds of people just kept on coming in the door.

[Los Angeles] [Korean] Hae Jang Chon Restaurant

Hae Jang Chon Restaurant
3821 W 6th St
Los Angeles, CA 90020
(213) 389-8777
http://www.haejangchon.com

We decided to have all you can eat Korean BBQ for dinner because (1) I love Korean BBQ; (2) it's cheap and affordable; and (3) Little J is growing and that boy can eat!  He loves meat and all you can eat seemed to be the best choice to feed a hungry boy.

Hae Jang Chon is located in a Korean plaza off 6th St, next to Cafe Nandarang (ahhh... drinking in Ktown back in the days...).  We got to the restaurant around 5:15pm.  No wait.

Shrine Circus

April 18, 2009, Saturday. We met up with Wen, her hubby, little J, Miho, and her man at Shrine Auditorium for some circus fun.  Thanks to Goldstar, we were able to get the ticket at 50% off price of $7.50.  Not counting Cirque de Soleil show, this is my FIRST time going to a circus!

There were some clowns at the door greeting people.  I don't know.... somehow both Dr. P and I find clowns a little... creepy.

[Los Angeles] [Burgers] The Apple Pan

The Apple Pan
10801 W. Pico Blvd
Los Angeles, CA 90064
(310) 475-3585

Friday night, 12:00am, Dr. P  was hungry.  He didn't want fast food.  He doesn't like 7-Eleven hot dog as much as I do.  He didn't feel like going to a sit-down place.  Where to get decent somewhat gourmet food to go at midnight in West LA?  Of course, The Apple Pan.

Hickoryburger ($6.70)
Served with mayonnaise, our own sauce, pickles, lettuce.  With melted natural Tillamook Cheddar $0.50 extra.

Dr. P got his favorite, Hickoryburger.  Juicy beef pattie, melted cheddar cheese, lettuce, pickle, mayo and Apple Pan's special Hickory smoked BBQ sauce.  I wasn't hungry and just wanted a bite.  I had one bite, then a second bite, then a third bite.  All of a sudden, I felt hungry.

Adopt a Greyhound?

This semester, I am taking a work experience class.  We need 4 work experience to graduate from the Registered Veterinary Technician program.  My first work experience is to work with rescued greyhounds from Greyhound Pets of America.  We get 2 sets of 8 dogs a semester.  They are rescued race dogs from Mexico.  Some of them are getting older, and some of them just don't run fast enough.  So they were about to be killed and were rescued by this non-profit organization.  They were abused pretty bad and weren't properly cared for.  So we take care of them for the semester, treat any disease they might have, neuter/spay them, and clean their teeth.  Also most of them do not know how to interact with people in the beginning.  We try to socialize with them, get them used to people and trust people.  By the time they leave our school, they are 100% ready for adoption.

I just finished working with the first set of 8 dogs.  It was such a rewarding experience.  The dogs were so scared and timid in the beginning.  In 7 weeks, they had became so friendly, affectionate, and sweet toward people.  They finally learned to just be happy and know that there are people like us who love them.  3 of the dogs already got adopted.  Does anybody want to adopt an adorable greyhound?

On Thursday, dad wanted to take aunt to a shabu shabu restaurant for dinner.  Somehow I didn't feel like shabu shabu, and suggested Boiling Point.  I simply mentioned "stinky tofu" and "spicy", and everyone agreed Boiling Point sounded better than shabu shabu.

There are 7 different hot pot on the menu.

Look You Fan Dim
陸羽美食

123 N Garfield Ave
Monterey Park, CA 91754
(626) 280-2888

On Wednesday, we took Aunt and Cousin to Look You Fan Dim for some family style Chinese food.  Aunt said my cousin usually only eats one bowl of rice at http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com.  But that night, he ate 3 bowls!

海鮮豆腐羹 Seafood Tofu Soup ($6.50)

We started dinner with my dad's favorite soup, Seafood Tofu Soup.  The portion was much smaller than the one from the set menu.  The waitress said because the set menu was meant for 5~6 people.  So a regular order of soup was meant for 3~4 people?

Duarte, CA 91010
(626) 358-2115
http://www.osf.com

Last Tuesday, we took my aunt and cousin back to The Old Spaghetti Factory for their 40 Years Anniversary Special again.  Everyone loved the food, and the price was just too cheap.

Sicilian Meatballs ($10.99 $6.59)
Two large roasted beef meatballs delicately seasoned then topped with tomato sauce

The complete meal came with bread (with the most delicious garlic butter!), soup or salad, drink, and ice cream.... all for under $7!  Dad ordered the Sicilian Meatballs this time.  He liked it better than the sausage with meat sauce he got last time.  The meatballs were very flavorful.

Aunt and cousin came to visit us from San Jose for a week.  We went out to eat EVERYDAY!  I ate so much last week and woke up every morning still feeling full.  It was great!  haha....  Monday night we went to Noodle House and had the best buns!

海帶絲 Cold Shredded Seaweed ($2.50)

We started the meal with some appetizers.  Cold Shredded Seaweed was good, but not as garlicky as how I like it.  I like my seaweed with tons of garlic!

Please Leave Tips

I don't know who you are, so I just have to write here.

To the couples who went to Wonton Forest twice after reading about it on my blog:
YOU NEED TO LEAVE TIPS!
Wonton Forest is not a fast food restaurant.
There are waitresses who serves you, which means you NEED to leave tips.
I know you like the food because actually went back twice.
The first time they thought maybe you just forgot to leave tips.
But then you didn't leave tips again the second time even though you told the chef you love the food.
Maybe you didn't know you should leave tips at Wonton Forest.
Chef Paul actually didn't mind too much about it.  He was happy that you like the food.
He was just concerned for his waitresses because they survive off of tips
But I do mind!  Especially it was referral from my blog!
He actually told me not to mention it. But I don't think that's right and really want to say something about it.
So I'm telling you now: Next time you go back to Wonton Forest, PLEASE LEAVE TIPS!
Thank you.

Ever since I started working my last job, I never had time to see my friends.  Because I worked night time, I could never have dinner with friends.  No more working at night.  No more working on weekend.  I can finally go out with friends for dinner on weekend like normal people do!  Since my friend Tammy and Sam live in OC, we decided to go down there for dinner.  I found out about Savannah at the Beach's $10 special and have been wanting to try.  Perfect!  Dinner for 6 at Savannah on Saturday night!

Dr. P and I arrived first.  We got an outside patio seat.  There was a big pit fire.  Lots of people were having drinks around it.

[Temple City] [Chinese] Happy Noodle

Happy Noodle
麵對面

4815 El Monte Ave
Temple City, CA 91780
(626) 279-7558

Happy Noodle was one of my parents' favorite restaurant.  The fried buns and dumplings were great last time I went there with them.  We went back to Happy Noodle last Thursday.  The food was so disappointing that my parents had vowed to never go back again.

酸菜羊肉砂鍋 Sour Vegetable Lamb Casserole ($8.95)

The meal started out with Sour Vegetable Lamb Casserole.  Tender slices of lamb (but with lots of fat), tofu, glass noodle, and sour cabbage in the soup.  We all enjoyed the soup.  This was the only one dish that we were fully satisfied with.

[Duarte] [Italian] The Old Spaghetti Factory

The Old Spaghetti Factory
1431 Buena Vista St
Duarte, CA 91010
(626) 358-2115
http://www.osf.com

Last Tuesday, I found out about The Old Spaghetti Factory's 40 Anniversary special.  Every Tuesday till the end of May, all spaghetti meal are 40% off.  That means a complete meal for about $6!  Amazing price.  So parents and I checked out the 40 years old venue for lunch on that same day.

We went to the Duarte location. They have a giant parking lot, and the building doesn't really look like a restaurant.  Above the entrance, it said "Duarte School".  We weren't sure if this was the restaurant or not when we first arrived.  I am guessing this building might be the Duarte School back in the day?

Forbes Entertainment
天皇

1536 Peck Rd
South El Monte, CA 91733
(626) 443-2800

My friend Jenivieve had her MV release party at Forbes Entertainment.  I used to love the nightlife scene a lot back when I was younger.  But now I rarely go to clubs or bars.  But since I was just at Forbes, let's do a bar review.

Forbes is a karaoke bar.  You can sing in front of a crowd.  Or you can get a private room on the second floor, but I think that's gonna cost you quite a bit.  They have mandarin songs, Cantonese songs, and English songs.  The place is not that big.  They also have a bar, where my friend Jen works as a bartender on the weekend.

阿宗麵線

140 W Valley Blvd #208
San Gabriel, CA 91776
(626) 280-0186
http://www.ay-chung.com

Dr. P and I was still full from the meal at Bamboodles, so we wanted something light for dinner.  I suggested the intestine thin noodle at Ay-Chung Flour-Rice Noodle because (1) I LOVE intestine; (2) when I'm hungry, I never think one bowl of the noodle is enough.  So maybe it'll be just the right amount since I wasn't hungry that day.  I was a little worried that Dr. P won't like the unique Taiwanese noodle, but he ended up loving it.

The restaurant is set up like a fastfood joint.  You place the order at the counter and pay.  They'll give you a receipt with your number on it.  When they call your number, go up to the counter to pick up the food and find a table to sit down.  No tip needed.  Also you can just leave the drity plates on the table.  Someone will come and clean the table.

My brother went to Bamboodles when it first opened sometime last year.  He has been raving about their noodles.  Then last weekend, he told me about a daily $1 noodle special.  When Dr. P came to visit me last Saturday, I dragged him there with me to see if the $1 deal was real.  And it was!

If you go on weekday, you can order just the $1 special.  But on weekend, you have to order one item (including drinks) to get the $1 special.  The $1 special changes daily.

My parents had dinner at Look You Fan Dim a week before.  They loved the food and the price.  I had the leftover and thought the food was good.  So we went again this weekend with brother and his girlfriend.

The restaurant is right next door to Hong Kong Supermarket.  It's not a big place, but it feels pretty cozy inside.

[Los Angeles] [Fusion] The Kress

The Kress
6608 Hollywood Blvd
Los Angeles, CA 90028
(323) 785-5000
http://www.thekress.net

First things first: This place is huge. Like, so huge the main dining room alone seats 220 people. Built in 1934, the multi-level art deco-style building was originally an S.H. Kress Department Store. In 1949, it became the world headquarters for Frederick's of Hollywood. Now, after more than two years of restoration, owner Michael Viscuso (who helped resuscitate San Diego's Gaslamp Quarter) has unveiled its new-century incarnation as The Kress, a shiny larger-than-life supper club, sushi lounge, basement disco and rooftop bar. The ground level restaurant is like a temple to all things Asian with an '80s Vegas twist--red lights wash over the central wraparound bar anchored by a massive crystal chandelier, while clear acrylic bar stools, ornate black lacquer accents (including a completely restored 1930s ceiling) and gold leather banquettes dot the space. Oh, and there's two enormous fu temple dogs guarding the doorway. Not to be outdone, the menu is just as grandiose, offering everything from daily bento box specials to gold-flecked nigiri (it's standard here) and cook-it-yourself shrimp skewers that come presented on a 500+-degree stone. Now that's hot.  --From SCREW THE RECESSION--

Thanks to Screw The Recession, we can enjoy a new restaurant for 50% off every week!  Last week's restaurant pick was The Kress in Hollywood.  The Kress is more well known for its night club than its Asian fusion restaurant.  The club didn't have good reviews on Yelp.  But I was still hopeful about their food.  I mean, if it's not good, at least it's 50% off, right?

We managed to find free parking on the side street and walked a block to The Kress.  I read the valet parking behind the club/restaurant cost $20!

[Los Angeles] [Peruvian] Pollo A La Brasa Western

Pollo A La Brasa Western
764 S Western Ave
Los Angeles, CA 90005
(213) 382-4090

My last day of work, coworker Iris insisted on treating me dinner.  I didn't want to pick anything too expensive.  And I remember she likes Pollo A La Brasa last time we got it at work.  So Pollo A La Brasa it is.

The original plan was that I would call ahead to order, we would arrive at the place 15 minutes later, Iris would jump out of the car to grab it, and back to the office in no time.  But the plan didn't work.  I did called ahead to place an order for a whole chicken.  I told them I would be there in 10 minutes to pick it up (even giving them 5 extra minutes to get the order ready).  We got there, Iris went in, came back and said the food wouldn't be ready for another 15 minutes.  Since there was no parking, I had to circle around the block for a few times.  Then I got tired so I parked at some small street and told Iris to call me when she got the food.  I waited... for 30 minutes!!!!

Whole Roasted Chicken (US$16.00)

So I wasn't happy about the long wait.  But as soon as I saw the chicken, I decided to let my anger go.  The price of a whole chicken had gone up to $16 from $15.  The chicken was the best rotisserie chicken ever!  It was so juicy and full of smoked flavor.
